DESCRIPTION: Set at York and Nanjing Universities, this summer course aims at improving students' Chinese language ability and introduces them
to basic aspects of classical and modern Chinese civilization. The course begins with three weeks of language training at York U, and is followed by a
month's program in Nanjing, China, where students will be immersed in intensive language studies in a local environment, as well as exposed to various
historical sites of the city, and will gain transnational life experience.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
Student residences which include a common kitchen, telephone, TV, and air-conditioning.
EXCURSIONS:
Nanjing Museum and the Gate of China, Historical town Zhou Shuang in Suzhou, overnight stay in Hangzhou, Orchid Pavilion (Lanting) and Lu Xun
Musuem in Shaoxing, and more!

DESCRIPTION: Variously described through the ages as a stage, a labyrinth, and a blight, London has remained an inspiration, both negative and
positive, for generations of British writers. In this course, which will comprise of three weeks in the classroom at York University and four weeks at
important sites throughout London, we will investigate how an understanding of London – its architecture, public spaces, monuments, streetscapes, and
geographical features – can transform our understanding of its literature. Readings will be transhistorical and wide-ranging as we attend to the variety of
experiences London has offered readers and inhabitants, a variety reflecting differences of neighbourhood, social class, immigrant affiliation, gender and
genre.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
Single rooms with shared bathrooms at the University of London. Meal plan breakfast included.

DESCRIPTION: Using the city as a space of discovery and interaction, we will visit museums, galleries, neighbourhoods of historical and
contemporary interest, and nearby cities (e.g. Hamburg, Leipzig, or Dresden). Students will continue to build all four skills (listening, speaking, reading,
writing) through classroom and field trip activities and have a unique opportunity to experience German culture and society first-hand in one of Europe's
most exciting and vibrant cities.

DESCRIPTION:
Ethnographic Fieldwork involves very particular dilemmas. What usable knowledge can we acquire through our own experiences and encounters "in the field"?
How can we, as both researchers and human travellers, navigate the ethical, emotional, and epistemological complexities of doing research with and about
people?
This course will provide students with a theoretical and practical toolbox for designing, conducting, and writing ethnographic research projects. Students will
explore the concepts and skills in class and then apply and develop them in the field. Students will have the opportunity to design a research project in
consultation with the instructor, and to conduct their own ethnographic fieldwork during an intensive four-week research trip to Athens, Greece.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
College Years in Athens shall provide accommodations for participants in simply furnished apartments rented and maintained by College Years in Athens in the
Pangrati neighborhood of central Athens.

AP/IT 3771 3.0: Modern and Contemporary Italian Culture
DESCRIPTION: Key issues in contemporary Italian society are studied in their historical development, with focus on the following: unification and its

FA/THEA 3000 3.0 – Production Practicum

PREREQUISITES: Open to all Faculty of Fine Arts students at the 2nd year level or above at time of submission. No prerequisite courses required.
COURSE OBJECTIVE: For students to present a fully realized production for the general public at Venue13 during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Proposals will be considered based primarily on feasibility and their ability to be produced within the Edinburgh Festival Fringe program and may
consist of everything from text based dramas to interactive installations.

PROGRAM FEE: $2,800 CAD - This includes housing expenses, general shared portion of production related expenses (registration, physical

EXPENSES: Students planning to participate in the Fine Arts Edinburgh Festival Fringe Program should be prepared to bear the majority of the
financial responsibility personally. The Faculty has recently made available funding to assist with international travel and internships for which students

THEATRE TICKETS: This is the student’s personal suggested allotment for viewing other festival productions.
SUBMISSIONS AND PARTICIPATION: Proposals will be considered based primarily on feasibility and their ability to be produced within the
Edinburgh Festival Fringe program and may consist of everything from text based dramas to interactive installations. Pre-existing projects that have
seen full or workshop performances are encouraged, as are projects that have more production elements decided (script, cast, personnel, etc.) than not.
While projects in the idea phase will be considered, preference is given to shows which are more “tour ready” or have a clear and specific development
plan in preparation for touring to Edinburgh in August 2014.
You may submit a production and a group of students under a PROJECT proposal, or you may submit yourself as an INDIVIDUAL participant
unattached to any project proposal.
All proposals should be submitted as a hard copy with all pertinent information (no e-mail submissions). Please include your name, contact
information, department, program and year level as well as a brief statement on your desire to participate individually in the Fine Arts Edinburgh

DEVISED THEATRE STUDENTS’ PARTICIPATION
Students in the 4th year Devised Theatre class only need to indicate their desire to participate in the program by February 10, 2014. This deadline is to
indicate their commitment to participation, and is not necessarily an indication of commitment to a specific production, which will be determined at the
culmination of their course, to meet the registration deadline for the printed Fringe program. The early registration deadline with the Fringe Society for
inclusion in the printed program is March 19th, 2014. If it is not possible to meet the early deadline, the show selection must be finalized by the final
deadline for the program, which is April 9th, 2014.
This will be coordinated through the 4th year Devised Theatre course directors Gwen Dobie and John Mayberry.

All Faculty of Fine Arts students in good standing that are at the 2nd year level and above at the time of submission may apply to be considered for

South Africa - Limpopo Province

AP/HUMA 4147 6.0: Children's Culture in Context - Field Study in South Africa
PREREQUISITES: None. Priority will be given to upper-level Children's Studies majors.
DESCRIPTION: This course provides a rare opportunity for students to undertake community development in practice in a rural community in
Limpopo province, South Africa with a focus on children's rights and cultures. Students will receive applied experience in a local primary school and
opportunities to undertake community development projects. Students in this course can expect to apply the theory-based knowledge of rights,
construction and representation of global childhood cultures in this South African experience. As a part of this course, students will have the opportunity
to learn local language, customs, music, as well as travel within the local area to learn about history, culture and childhoods.
LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION: English
FORMAT: The course will be offered in the summer session only. The course will commence at York University with a five-day orientation (April 28May 2) and students will travel to South Africa for approximately four weeks (May 9-June 4).

La Universidad Católica de Ávila (UCAV), Ávila, Spain: June 02 - June 26
DESCRIPTION: This course is an extensive review of the fundamentals of Spanish grammar and emphasizes the four skills, listening, speaking,
reading and writing through compositions, written exercises, oral presentations and conversations.
The objective of this course is to broaden communicative language skills through written and oral exercises. Grammar is reviewed and multimedia
resources are used to expand vocabulary, reinforce grammatical points, and improve oral skills.
This is an interactive course that provides ample opportunity to explore and deepen previous knowledge of Spanish through written work, oral
interactions in pair and group work with other students in the class, and with various types of multimedia resources. Since the second half of the course
will be led by York faculty in a Spanish-speaking environment, students will benefit not only from the in-class activities, but also from immersion in
Spanish-speaking culture.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
Single bedrooms, sheets and towels are provided and changed for you each week. There is a coin operated washing machine and dryer for personal
laundry. Wifi and plug-in internet access is also available in the room. Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided. Airport transfer will also
be provided (Madrid-Avila-Madrid).

to answer your questions.

Experiential Trips Abroad refers to one field excursion as part of an LA&PS course. Faculty members design a trip outside of Canada to engage
students in an active experimentation of the concepts and materials from their study.
