Math 150 Study Guide Exam 1
Winter 2009
Covers Sections:
11.1 Conics: know general terminology associated with conics and how to construct them, and the four
different kinds of conics.
11.2 The Parabola: Be able to find the equation of a parabola from some basic features, and be able to
find the basic features and graph it starting with an equation in any form. Be able to find the directrix,
the focus and the vertex, orientation. Try problems: 29-54.
11.3 The Ellipse: Same as for the parabola. Be able to find the center, vertices, foci, endpoints of the
minor axis, the orientation. Try problems: 43-64
11.4 The Hyperbola: Same as for the parabola. Be able to find the center, vertices, foci, asymptotes,
orientation. Try problems: 39-60.
7.1 Angles and Their Measure: be able to convert between radians and degrees, and be able to find the
arclength and area of a sector for a specified angle. Try problems: 23-58, 71-86.
7.2 Right Angle Trigonometry: know all the identities in this section, be able to take information from
one trigonometric function and find the other five, be able to use identities to reduce expressions to
exact values without the use of a calculator. Try problems: 21-62.
7.3 Computing the Values of Trigonometric Functions of Acute Angles: be able to use standard angles to
find the exact value of trigonometric functions. Try problems: 17-28, 61-82
7.4 Trigonometric Functions of General Angles: be able to find all the trigonometric functions given
either a point on the terminal side of an angle, or one trig function and quadrant information. Be able
to find trig functions for angles that are multiples of 90° and reference angles. Try problems: 11-100
7.5 Unit Circle Approach; Properties of the Trigonometric Functions: be able to find a point on the
terminal side of and angle on the unit circle given one or more of the trigonometric functions, know odd
even function properties, know the periodicity of the trigonometric functions, the domain and range of
the trigonometric functions. Try problems: 9-88.
