MyPyramid for Kids Classroom Materials, Go Fish Cards The instructing teacher will: Introduce the lesson by describing some favorite breakfast foods, and then, have the students share with the class some of their favorite breakfast foods. Inquire of the students why is breakfast important? (Essen. Question) Briefly recall to the students how important healthy foods are, and ask them enthusiastically if they want to practice healthy breakfast habits. The assistant teacher will hand out both MyPlate sheets to each students seat, and the instructor will: Instruct the students to come to the reading area appropriately. Read from the book, Healthy Eating (Now I Know), and ask the students “what, when, where, and how” questions during the reading. Use the MyPyramid for Kids Poster and the MyPlate graphics sheet to discuss the healthy food groups with students. Then, students should label the food groups onto the blank MyPlate activity sheet. (The idea is that the blank sheet is the student’s breakfast plate, and the student will write examples of healthy breakfast foods into the correct food group listed.) Choose to either use the MyPyramid Go Fish Cards as examples to follow, or allow the students to paste them to the activity sheet. The book, Healthy Eating (Now I Know) was added. The blank coloring activity sheet, ChooseMyPlate, was added. The student will: Respond to the favorite breakfast foods or to the reading questions. Be actively engaged in lesson energizer. Learn of healthy breakfast foods and the food groups. Label his/her breakfast plate and give examples of healthy foods. The teacher will challenge the student to go home and eat healthy breakfast meals before school starts, and share the MyPlate graphics sheet, as well as the activity sheet, to their parents/guardians. The assistant teacher should work individually with any students with disabilities, but if that is not possible, then the exceptional students should begin work immediately on their breakfast plate and the teacher should work individually with that student to make sure that the needs are met.
