Federal Direct Loan Programs - What You Need to Know
Need-based student loans are appealing because they can be repaid over a long period of time with a low interest rate.

Another big benefit of loans is that UAB is a federal direct lender. That means UAB lends funds to you directly from the U.S. Treasury,
so you don’t have to complete bank loan forms or wait for checks to arrive from lenders. You get the money right when you need it.


These loans are sponsored by the federal government, but UAB determines your eligibility and handles processing.
All first-time borrowers are required to complete entrance counseling online.
Federal Direct Stafford Loans
Federal loans that come in two forms, subsidized and unsubsidized.
Subsidized loans are based on need; unsubsidized loans aren't. Currently, the fixed interest on this loan is 6.8%. The interest on
the subsidized Stafford Loan is paid by the federal government while the student is in school and during the six month grace period.

Professional students can borrow a limited annual amount and aggregate amount during the course of their academic careers. These
limits are for subsidized separately and for subsidized and unsubsidized loans combined. The difference between the subsidized loan
amount and the limit may be borrowed by the student as an unsubsidized loan. The maximum annual limit for graduate and
professional students is $8,500. The maximum aggregate limit is $65,500.
Unsubsidized Loan - A loan for which the government does not pay the interest. Currently, the fixed interest on this loan is 6.8%.
The borrower is responsible for the interest on an unsubsidized loan from the date the loan is disbursed, even while the student is still in
school. Students may avoid paying the interest while they are in school by capitalizing the interest, which increases the loan amount.
Unsubsidized loans are not based on financial need and may be used to finance the family contribution. See Stafford Loans for
information about unsubsidized Stafford Loans.
Perkins Loans
Formerly the National Direct Student Loan Program, the Perkins Loan allows students to borrow at a 5% fixed interest rate to
supplement Federal Stafford Loan awards. No interest accrues while the borrower is enrolled in school at least half-time. The Perkins
Loan has one of the lowest interest rates and is awarded by the financial aid administrator to students with exceptional financial need.
This loan carries a 9 month grace period following enrollment termination before repayment begins. The repayment period can be up to
ten years. You must complete the FAFSA to be considered for this loan and your financial aid file must be complete while limited
funding remains available.Regardless of age or marital status, the FAFSA must be completed, and parental information must be
provided to be considered for this loan.
You may want to consider:

Internship Opportunities
Internships with local politicians and public servants provides a great opportunity for students to learn first-hand
how our government works. Interns gain valuable knowledge and experience by having hands-on opportunity to
learn about the legislative process, as well as the operations of a Congressional office. See local elected official
websites for possible internship information.

Military Academy Nominations
Young people who are genuinely interested in pursuing a career in the military service and who are looking to
build a career foundation at one of our esteemed service academies are encouraged to open a file in the
Congressional District office by sending a letter of interest.

Student Financial Aid
Information is available to students to learn more about the process of locating and applying for financial aid.

A NOTE ABOUT SEARCH SERVICES THAT CHARGE A FEE
Several companies offer computerized scholarship search services, often charging
fees of $175 or higher. I NEVER recommend these services. Thoroughly
investigate them before paying any of these types of fees. Read the Scholarship
Scam Alert on The FinAid! website and information from the Federal Trade
Commission.
Other places to search for scholarships include the reference section of your local library, high school guidance
counselor's office, and bookstores. You can save time by creating a form letter to send to organizations to
inquire about their scholarships.
