Internal Knowledge Exchange Network – Work-Based Learning Seminar: Tuesday March 20th 2012 Feedback Mentoring What went well Great session – good to see such a wide range of faculties/departments represented. Group dynamics, excellent. Very good cross section of staff and pg students. Attendance was a bonus and from business. Good presentation, good pace, lively and interactive. Well run and organised. Lots of interaction. Freedom to express thoughts and views. Good venue. Good opportunity for discussion between faculties and departments. Understanding what a mentor does. Group discussions always beneficial. Student display of work based learning. Great for networking. Well run session – particularly the ‘definition’ activity. Welcomed meeting and learning from colleagues from other parts of the University. Discussion group. Discussion in 2’s hearing other peoples experiences. Discussing difference between mentoring/coaching etc. Excellent overall – good mix of tutor input and group discussion. Mixture of people – interaction. Understanding the enormity of the “grey areas”. Nice atmosphere and good mix of people. Useful theory referred to. Good to be able to share/discuss ideas with others. Good mix of people to stimulate productive discussion. Opportunity to share ideas about mentoring colleagues throughout the University. Clarification about what a mentor does … thematically. Underlining of importance of defining expectations. Got to the essence of mentoring. Fertilisation between domains. Enjoyed the opportunity for discussions about mentoring. Presentation of the complexities of mentoring. I found the talk interesting and thought provoking. S:\RBI\Work Based Learning\WBL IKEN\March 2012\Feedback from event What went not so well More time for reflection Needed more time. More activities around mentoring would be good. How to structure mentor/coach support arrangements. Good to have even more chat. Time – not enough! Confusion – regarding mentor, coach, advisor Nothing at all – but might be nice to include a few case study type examples of monitoring in practice. Note sure there was any clarity gained – but that’s ok. However, need some consistency in understanding within an education context. Strong sense of the breadth of definition of mentoring. Would have welcomed more about the scope and boundary of the activity. What do you want to find out more about? Working within a structured approach to mentoring. Training. Novel ideas for assessing mentees needs. Would like more on coaching. How can the value of mentoring be renumerated? What’s in it for the mentor? How is WBL spreading throughout UWE and the world? More on the skills and processes involved in mentoring – possibly also working on case studies. Topics for the next IKEN/WBL? It would help if the subsequent session could be cumulative. As someone who has done work based learning which has been great, perhaps others would like to have greater understanding of the positives of WBL. Inter cultural communications. Staff training across UWE. Breaking boundaries across faculties to find best practice. More practical advice on being a good mentor. Mentor training. My project is …. Experience of work based learners on UWE’s SHELL framework. A practical session about training mentors … - what we should cover etc. – sharing of info and good practice. Examples of WBL. Different models of WBL pedagogy [Note: Work-Based Learning Repository of information http://wbl-ipd.uwe.ac.uk ‘Processes and Models’} Some mentoring case studies.
