Where is God when life falls apart? Mothers’ Day & Senior Recognition Sunday 4th Sunday of Easter May 11th, 2014 Trinity Lutheran Church, Truman MN Holy Communion, Bread of Life setting With One Voice (WOV) p. 28 GATHERING Congregation reads bold print. PRELUDE GATHERING REFLECTION Motherhood can take on a very wide definition if given the chance. One can become a mother by the natural way, through child birth. One becomes a mother through adoption, formally or informally. Jesus speaks of another image of motherhood and brotherhood and sisterhood. The spiritual family. Those who share a common mission and goal and are led by our heavenly Father. Today, nationally, we reflect on the blessings of motherhood. As a church, we should constantly reverence that relationship and give it honor. As we send our graduates out with our blessings, we ask them to remember that they too have a spiritual family here at Trinity and that we will continue praying for them in their pursuits and their futures…wherever God may lead them. PRAYER FOR THE WEEK: Holy Provider, we give you thanks for the women of faith in our lives and ask for your blessèd presence with them and our graduates in the days to come. Amen. BELL WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS Lord of Creation, You give us food in due season. Forgive us when we do not give thanks. Lead us to acknowledge your grace in this and all things, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Truly God is the Father of all good things and as a loving Father he forgives us for the sake of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. GATHERING HYMN For All the Faithful Women ( vs. 1,2, Last) ELW #419 GREETING WOV p. 28 MOTHER’S DAY LITANY based on Proverbs 31:10-31 L: 10 A capable wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. C: 11 The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. L: 12 She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life. C: 13 She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands. L: 14 She is like the ships of the merchant, she brings her food from far away. C: 15 She rises while it is still night and provides food for her household and tasks for her servant-girls. 16 L: She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard. C: 17 She girds herself with strength, and makes her arms strong. 2 L: 18 She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp does not go out at night. C: 19 She puts her hands to the rod for unspun thread, and her hands hold the spindle. L: 20 She opens her hand to the poor, and reaches out her hands to the needy. C: 21She is not afraid for her household when it snows, for all her household are clothed in crimson. L: 22 She makes herself coverings; her clothing is fine linen and purple. C: 23 Her husband is known in the city gates, taking his seat among the elders of the land. L: 24 She makes linen garments and sells them; she supplies the merchant with sashes. C: 25 Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. L: 26 She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. C: 27 She looks well to the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness. L: 28 Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband too, and he praises her: C: 29 "Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all." L: 30 Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. C: 31 Give her a share in the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the city gates. L: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. C: As it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen. HYMN OF PRAISE Faith of Our Fathers ( vs. 2) ELW #813 PRAYER OF THE DAY: God of freedom, Paul and Silas worshiped you, even when they were flogged and imprisoned. Transform our hearts so that we may also rejoice in you at all times and in all situations. Amen. WORD FIRST READING: Acts 16:16-34 6 One day, as we were going to the place of prayer, we met a slave-girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners a great deal of money by fortune-telling. 17 While she followed Paul and us, she would cry out, "These men are slaves of the Most High God, who proclaim to you a way of salvation." 18 She kept doing this for many days. But Paul, very much annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, "I order you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her." And it came out that very hour. 19 But when her owners saw that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the authorities. 20 When they had brought them before the magistrates, they said, "These men are disturbing our city; they are Jews 21 and are advocating customs that are not lawful for us as Romans to adopt or observe." 3 22 The crowd joined in attacking them, and the magistrates had them stripped of their clothing and ordered them to be beaten with rods. 23 After they had given them a severe flogging, they threw them into prison and ordered the jailer to keep them securely. 24 Following these instructions, he put them in the innermost cell and fastened their feet in the stocks. 25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly there was an earthquake, so violent that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone's chains were unfastened. 27 When the jailer woke up and saw the prison doors wide open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, since he supposed that the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Paul shouted in a loud voice, "Do not harm yourself, for we are all here." 29 The jailer called for lights, and rushing in, he fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 Then he brought them outside and said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" 31 They answered, "Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household." 32 They spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. 33 At the same hour of the night he took them and washed their wounds; then he and his entire family were baptized without delay. 34 He brought them up into the house and set food before them; and he and his entire household rejoiced that he had become a believer in God. The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. PSALM: 1:1-6 (read responsively the bold print) 1 Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers; 2 but their delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law they meditate day and night. 3 They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper. 4 The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. 5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; 6 for the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Go Light Your Candle Choir GOSPEL: Matthew 12:46-50 C: Glory to you, O Lord. 46 While he was still speaking to the crowds, his mother and his brothers were standing outside, wanting to speak to him. 47 Someone told him, "Look, your mother and your 4 brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you." 48 But to the one who had told him this, Jesus replied, "Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?" 49 And pointing to his disciples, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers! 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother." L: The Word of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. CHILDREN’S SERMON SERMON HYMN OF THE DAY Blest Are They WOV #764 THE APOSTLES’ CREED WOV p. 33 PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION L: Lord in your mercy.
