Miss Reese’s Pieces
Weekly Newsletter December 17-20
Dear Parents,
I cannot believe the last week of school this semester is upon us! The first
semester has flown by! What a wonderful first half of first grade I have
had with your children! I feel so blessed to have looped with such AMAZING
students and families!
Thank you for donations sent in for the first grade adopted family. I know
this family in our district will greatly appreciate items of need this time of
year. Thank you also for always working with your child at home on reading
and new concepts we are learning at school. I love to hear the kids tell me
what books they read at home with you too. I appreciate each and every one

Reading and Writing
This week we will study ending blends such as –lk and -st. Rather than three
activities, please only do two this week with it being a shorter week.
Reading folders will go home Monday and Tuesday.
Instant Words we are studying this week: an, by, know, little, only
The Comprehension Toolkit Lesson this week: Read with a Question in Mind.
In this lesson we want students to keep a question in mind as they read to
answer it, use navigational features of texts to find answers to their
questions, and learn how one question can lead to another question to expand
thinking.
We are finishing our study of pattern books and creating pattern books in
Writer’s Workshop this week. Students have been introduced to a variety of
pattern books and are doing a great job applying it in their own writing. A big
emphasis during our writing time has been using appropriate capitalization,
punctuation, and use of sight words.
Math
This week in Unit 5 we will compare animal weights, work on greater than and
less than number stories, and comparison number stories. We will take time
to review what we have learned in Unit 5 on Thursday.
Social Studies
The President we will study this week is Ulysses S. Grant. The State we will
learn about this week is Mississippi.
Science
We are wrapping up our weather unit this week. It has been a fun month
exploring and learning more about weather together!
