MARCH 23, 2014 THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT EX 17:3-7 ROM 5:1-2, 5-8 JN 4:5-42 OR 4:5-15, 19B-26, 39A, 40-42 (28) “Now that we have been justified by faith, we are at peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have gained access by faith to the grace in which we now stand…the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us…when we were still powerless, Christ died for our sins...We have heard for ourselves, and we know that this really is the Savior of the world.” Paul’s letter presumes we know the full story, and so we do. But as we read it today we use it as a reminder of our need, this Lent, to seek the power of His grace, as it seems at times I am still powerless in trying to live a good, solid Christian life. I gradually come to appreciate my meeting with Jesus, as did the Samaritan woman of the gospel. Little by little Jesus opened the door of faith for her. He does the same for me. Jesus played with the idea of water, which the woman was seeking. He was offering the ‘living water’ the gift of grace. She wanted to fill her jar or pitcher. He wanted to fill her heart, to pour it on. As I begin this third week of Lent I ask that I may seek, find and treasure the gift He wants to give me, to fill me with His Spirit, His grace. What is grace? It is the life of God, communicated to me as a gift and accepted. Through this gift I indeed have His peace. His Word Today by Rev. William J. The Appeal is a vital source of funding for the programs and ministries that sustain the parishes across our Archdiocese. It is not too late to make your gift. Please be as generous as you can. Thank you for your kind support. The 2014 Cardinal’s Appeal is in its final stages in our parish. Next weekend is Commitment Weekend. At all Masses, you will have an opportunity to make your commitment to the Appeal. As children of Christ, we are called to serve others out of gratitude to our most generous God. Please consider a sacrificial pledge to the 2013 Appeal. Thank you. PAX CHRISTI METRO NEW YORK Water is a gift of life—both physical and spiritual. That comes through very well in this Sunday’s readings from Exodus and John. Water quenches our thirst. It is a cleansing agent for just about everything we use. Water also ritually washes away our sins. Why then do we treat it with such disregard? We waste it. We pollute it. We use it as a commodity to sell and as a weapon to withhold from our enemies. Many experts warn us of “water wars” where there are shortages and of shortages where there are wars. Jesus tells us He is living water. We need to show far greater respect for this sacred gift in all its forms and all its uses. Let’s begin today. MESSAGE FROM CARDINAL DOLAN Dear friends in the Lord: The Catholic Relief Services Collection funds six Catholic agencies that work to serve our suffering brothers and sisters in the Lord around the world. Through humanitarian aid, resettlement of displaced individuals and families, and advocating on behalf of victims, Catholic Relief Services allows us to see Christ in every suffering person. Allow me to share with you some information about two of the six agencies provided for by this collection. During drought seasons, the only water available in Ethiopia and other areas of East Africa runs deep underground—often as deep as 1,000 feet. Catholic Relief Services worked with other aid partners to bring in rigs that can drill down to these depths. Catholic Legal Immigration Network is a dedicated network of legal immigration programs that promotes the dignity and protects the rights of immigrants. Catholic Relief Services and Catholic Legal Immigration Network are two of the six worldwide Catholic relief agencies funded by the Catholic Relief Services Collection. These agencies work to provide food, water, disaster relief, and other vital assistance to those in need. Please be as generous as you can, as your support truly makes a difference.
