FAX: 307-265-0234

HOURS: Monday- Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm, with a volunteer on call 24/7
SERVICES: Provides relief to victims of disaster and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to
emergencies.
Disaster response services are mobilized for small and large disasters. The American Red Cross of
Wyoming- Natrona/Converse County Branch disaster response program focuses on meeting people’s
immediate emergency needs. When a disaster threatens or strikes, the Red Cross provides shelter, food
health and mental health services to address the basic human needs. The Red Cross also feeds
emergency workers, handles inquiries from concerned family members outside the disaster area, and
helps those affected by disaster to access other available community resources. The Thunder Basin
Branch maintains close working relationships with local emergency response and human service
agencies in order to insure that the needs of disaster victims can be managed efficiently and effectively.
Disaster relief services include the following:
Shelter and Feeding: The most visible and well-known of the Red Cross disaster relief activities are
sheltering and feeding. When disaster strikes, the Red Cross opens shelters for those displaced by a
disaster and provides meals and snacks to families and to emergency workers in the affected area.
Family Services: After a disaster, trained Red Cross interviewers meet one-on-one with families to
determine their needs. Depending on the family’s needs, they may be provided with financial assistance
to pay for groceries, new clothes, rent, emergency home repair, transportation, medicine, and tools. The
Red Cross also educates families about other community or government resources available to them,
and helps those needing long-term recovery assistance when other resources are inadequate.
Health services: Red Cross trained volunteers deliver first aid and attends to other health-related
matters. The Red Cross may help for certain medical needs, including prescription medicines, eyeglasses,
and emergency medical treatment. The American Red Cross of Wyoming does not provide blood
services.
Mental Health Services: Disaster mental health services workers are licensed mental health practitioners
trained to recognize the emotional impact of the disaster on its victims as well as disaster workers. They
offer information to educate people on the emotional impacts of disaster and how to cope with them.
Most importantly, though, disaster mental health workers offer a shoulder to cry on and comfort to
those who have lost everything but their lives.
Disaster Welfare Inquiry: If a loved one is in the affected disaster are, family members and friends from
outside the area can call their local chapter and request assistance in determining their whereabouts
and wellbeing.
17

SERVICES: The Department of Housing and Urban Development is the federal agency responsible for
addressing America’s housing needs such as providing housing assistance for the working poor,
minorities, Native Americans, people with disabilities, people with AIDS, the elderly and the homeless.
HUD also helps improve and develop communities, spur economic growth in distressed neighborhoods,
help rehabilitate and develop moderate and low cost housing and enforce fair housing laws.
The primary programs of HUD include:
 Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) to help communities with housing, economic
development and job opportunities. CDBG funds can also be used to construct or improve public
facilities, such as water, sewer, streets and neighborhoods.
 Rental subsidies in the form of Section 8 choice vouchers for low-income households.
 Subsidized public housing for low-income individuals and families.
 Homeless assistance in a “continuum of care”, through local communities and nonprofit organizations
by providing funds to help the homeless move from the streets to temporary shelter, to supportive
housing and ultimately back to mainstream life.
 HOME Investment Partnership Act block grant provides funds to develop and support affordable
housing for low-income persons.
 Preventing housing discrimination through public education and enforcement. HUD investigates and
resolves complaints under the Fair Housing laws.
 Mortgage and loan insurance through the Federal Housing Administration (FHA). FHA assists first-time
buyers and others by providing mortgage insurance to private lenders. It also insures loans for home
improvements and buying manufactured homes and assists in providing affordable rental housing by
insuring loans to developers and builders who construct or rehabilitate apartments and other housing
developments. HUD also administers a Housing Counseling Program to assist tenants and
homeowners in property maintenance, financial management and other matters.
HUD provides funds to state and local governments and to nonprofit organizations. Customers do not
apply directly to HUD but rather to the entities that administer these programs. For information on any

WEBSITE: www.ssa.gov
HOURS: Monday- Friday, 9:00am- 4:00pm, except for federal holidays
SERVICES: SSA provides benefits under two programs: Social Security and Supplemental Security Income
(SSI). SSI benefits are paid to those who qualify as aged (65 or older), blind or disabled. Social Security
benefits may be paid to those who have retired or become bing or disabled and their qualifying spouses

provides Medicare to those who have received disability benefits for two years or who are 65 years old.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: SSI requires that the applicant be 65 years old, blind or disabled, is a US
citizen or a legally admitted resident alien and resides in the USA. The applicant and their spouses’ or
parents(s) income are considered in determining the amount of payment and the resources (assets)
owned by the claimant, their wife or their parent will also be considered.
Social Security requires a wage earner pay into Social Security before they or their “auxiliaries” can be
considered “insured” for benefits. The amount of the person’s check is based on the amount of
contribution in the years before filing a claim. For those who are filing on someone else’s record, proof
of their relationship to that person is needed, a marriage certificate, for example. Afe is also important,
so a birth certificate or baptismal certificate is required.
