Tiered Lesson Plan Teacher: Miss O’Connell Date: July 16, 2010 Grade Level: 6th Grade Subject or Topic Math - Fractions Duration: 1 ½ weeks – 60 minute periods Pre-Assessment Strategy: The students will complete a pre-assessment on fractions through edHelper (www.edhelper.com/math/fractrionsfg1507.htm). The results from the pre-assessment will aid in the determination of the levels the students are on during instruction regarding the mathematical concept. 1. Grade Level Content Expectations Below-level Learners 1. Remembering 2. Understanding At-level Learners 3. Applying 4. Analyzing Above-level Learners 5. Evaluating 6. Creating * Grade 5 or below * Grade 6 * Grade 7 * Work with fractions * Organize fractions from least to greatest * Create a visual representation of fractions * Identify the components and terminology (i.e., numerator and denominator) of fractions * Match fractions to their equivalencies (i.e., 2/4 is the same as 1/2) * Recognize simple fractions and their decimal equivalency * Match fractions to their visual representation * Outline the steps to convert fractions to decimals * Compare fractions using less than, greater than, and equal to * Record, add and subtract like and unlike fractions * Multiply and divide fractions * Design a visual representation to show adding and subtracting fractions * Add and subtract mixed fractions * Multiply and divide mixed fractions * Detect fraction and decimal equivalences * Solve word problems that include fraction concepts * Add and subtract fractions with like denominators 2. Outcomes Students should be able to compare and compute with fractions that provide a visual representation for real-life situations. 3. Number of Learners Number of BelowLevel Learners = 6 Number of At-Level Learners = 11 Number of AboveLevel Learners = 5 * Working at Grade 5 or below * Working at Grade 6 * Working at Grade 7 or above * Little knowledge of fractions and decimals * Can identify properties of fractions and decimals to solve problems * Can identify properties of fractions and decimals to solve problems * Can accurately implement properties of fractions and decimals to solve problems 4. Common experience Read aloud to the students The Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Fractions Book by Jerry Pallotta. The students will answer questions about the reading following the book as well as use a copy of a Hershey’s Chocolate bar to show equivalent fractions. 5. Range of activities * Learn the components and terminology of fractions through the use of flash cards * Arrange fraction cards from least to greatest * Outline the steps to convert fractions to decimals through a flowchart * Learn the equivalencies of fractions through visual * Learn how to solve representation less than, greater than, matching game and equal to fraction * Use fraction problems with manipulatives to solve manipulatives problems * Learn how to add * Learn fraction equivalencies through fraction bars and subtract like and unlike fractions, recording the data * Create a diagram that represents the components of fractions * Create a movie that demonstrates how to add and subtract fractions * Learn how to add and subtract mixed fractions through reallife situations * Learn how to multiply and divide mixed fractions using manipulatives * Identify decimals with their visual fraction representation * Learn to add and subtract fractions * Work with groups B and C partners for modeling and enrichment purposes * Create a flipchart booklet that displays how to multiply and divide fractions * Learn fraction and decimal equivalencies through a Concentration game * Work with groups A and C partners to aid as a support system and share ideas * Learn how to solve fraction word problems through the use of reallife tools (i.e., using recipes, using rulers) * Work with groups B and C to provide assistance when necessary 6.
