Exam II Review
Study slides that described the various properties of silt and clay soils.
Be familiar with origin of silt vs. clay
Be able to label the moisture content graph from the Atterburg Limits discussion which shows the
different points at which a soil changes behavior (brittle, plastic, fluid).
Be able to use lab data (sieve, LL, PL) to classify soils. The AASHTO classification system will be attached
to the exam. YOU MUST HAVE A CALCULATOR!
There will be 3 pieces of equipment that you will have to identify.
Give a graph created in the lab from data collected during a test for LL, be able to determine the LL from
the plot.
Be familiar with the calculations for unconfined compression and the test used to determine “qu” and
“c”.
Review compaction methods for different soils types.
Review consolidation discussion of clay soils.
