For prominent contract publisher, I served mainly as executive editor of DOC News and a
consulting editor for HemAware. DOC News is a monthly newspaper published by the
American Diabetes Association that covers clinical aspects of diabetes, obesity, and
cardiovascular disease for primary care providers. HemAware is the bimonthly magazine
of the National Hemophilia Foundation. In both cases, I was involved in editorial
planning and assignments, hiring and supervision of freelancers, editing of copy, working
with copyeditors and designers, developing production schedules, meeting with clients,
representing publications at conferences and meetings, and other duties involved in news
publications. I also consulted with other TMG clients and publications as needed.
1981 Independent Writer/Editor
Hundreds of articles for trade and consumer publications, including USA Today,
Washington Post, Baltimore Sun, American Health, Harper's, American Medical News,
Maryland and American Archaeology, among many others.
Although the bulk of my work is in science, medicine and health care, I also write about
business, finance, law, food, lifestyles and a wide variety of topics. Highlights:
-- Wrote the history of Baltimore for city’s bicentennial commemorative program,
produced by Baltimore magazine in 1997, and the history of University of Maryland at
Baltimore for the school’s bicentennial in 2007.
-- Numerous science articles for children in ChemMatters and Reaction Times, both by
the American Chemical Society, and Science World.
-- From 1997 to 2000, wrote the monthly "Morning Rounds" column for EyeNet, the
magazine of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, presenting unusual eye
conditions in a literate nonfiction format from the treating doctor's perspective.
