6TH Grade Reading Syllabus Mrs. Cedillo 2014-2015 M rs . Stanfield Welcome to a wonderful year at Seven Lakes Junior High School! This year you will be introduced to a program called Reader/Writer Workshop. The goal of this program is to increase your confidence and academic success in both reading and writing. In Reader Writer Workshop you develop strategies for reading all types of text-and at the same time, we teach you to see and use the writing techniques you read in your texts. We want you to realize the connection between the words you read and the words you write. Through writing projects you create and novels you choose to read, you will see yourself grow into a lifelong reader and writer. Some Expectations: You will choose books that are interesting to you and that you understand. You will enhance your reading life by reading a variety of books, short stories and articles from a variety of genres. You will read daily at school and at home. You will take pride in your work. You will participate in conferences with me to assess your progress. You will be responsible for weekly reading response sheets during the course of each book that you read. The Work of Reading In reading, you will learn how to choose the best books for you, build stamina for reading, make inferences, apply the major literary elements to the books you are reading, and keep a literacy notebook. Tutorials Tutorials will be held in my classroom on Monday afternoons: 2:40 – 3:10 or Wednesday mornings: 6:50 - 7:00 Grading Scale 15%- Homework/Quizzes 40%-Class work 45%- Tests/ Projects Grades You will be assessed on your literacy notebook, conferences, reading response sheets, book reports, writing projects, and literacy activities. Most assessments will be based on rubrics. Supplies 1 composition notebook, which will be kept in class. Blue or black pens Post-it notes (a variety of colors and sizes) Student Responsibilities Be Prompt Be Positive Be Polite Be Productive Be Prepared Follow the class book check out policy Take good care of the books you borrow. Treat them gently and they will last a lot longer. Students will be responsible for creating an Edmodo account on-line. Students will need to access this outside of the classroom using the Internet, either on a computer or phone. If your child will not have access to Internet they may come before or after school to complete assignments.
