Fendt 936 Vario

New Fendt flagship

In the field and on the road: 360 HP from Fendt

The structural changes in agriculture continue undiminished – the number of large-scale farming and contracting businesses is increasing. This results in growing field sizes as well as disproportionately long distances between farmyard and field. Future-oriented farmers and agricultural contractors require exceptionally powerful, time and cost-saving technological solutions in a complete package.

Fendt offers this package – the new 936 Vario, which will be launched at the Agritechnica 2005 in Hanover. Fendt is the first manufacturer to present a technologically innovative, versatile high-horsepower tractor with up to 360 HP. This is a machine that meets all the demands of professional agricultural applications.

New dimensions with top specifications

A new tyre concept along with a full-fledged integral front mounting area and a 16-tonne permissible overall weight, provide exceptional pulling power and high in-field efficiency. The tractor reaches a top speed of 60 km/h on the road, a smart chassis concept guarantees premium driving safety and comfort.

Besides versatility, the design objective of this new featureloaded Fendt was to increase overall profitability. The productivity of this top-level tractor builds on the high output

2 of the 900 Vario series. Driving and operating comfort, as well as driving safety, have also been improved appreciably.

As the new flagship from Fendt, the 936 Vario joins the successful 900 Vario series and antes up performance and features in this top power segment from Fendt. Characteristic for these new Fendt high-horsepower tractors are not only their technical specifications, but also their attractive design.

The contours are based on a Porsche design study, characteristic features are the waisted bonnet, lighting elements and the new x5 cab.

The new 936 Vario’s engine: A powerhouse for the premium class

In the light of increasing diesel prices, fuel economy takes on a whole new meaning. To do justice to the issues professional farmers and agricultural contractors face concerning fuel consumption, Fendt uses a new economical Deutz engine generation in the 936 Vario, with the designation

TCD 2013 LO6 4V. This 4-valve engine with 7.14 litres of displacement generates max. 360 HP (according to

ECE R 24) at 1800 rpm and fulfils emission standards according to TIER III a.

The new speed-independent common rail high-pressure injection system makes an injection pressure of 1600 bar possible. Featuring EDC-7 electronic diesel control, this system has excellent torque rise and is noticeably quieter running, especially at lower engine speeds.

The high-tech injection system and the external AGRex exhaust gas recirculation system complement each other. This system makes precise cooling and proportioning of exhaust possible, a part of which is then returned to the combustion chamber. An optimized combustion process and significantly improved fuel economy are the greatest benefits this system offers.

The two oil-lubricated high-pressure pumps are technical innovations. They permit trouble-free operation with RME fuels – a factor that is gaining importance in these times of volatile fuel prices. A standard fuel pre-filter and a new inline air filter with permanent dust suction cleaning, guarantee less standing time and longer servicing intervals.

The electronic cooling system, Visctronic, ensures ideal fan speed modulation, which results in clearly improved overall efficiency. With a 660-liter tank capacity and an optimum specific fuel consumption of only 195 g/kWh, the 936 Vario

3 is very economical and provides excellent benchmarks for high performance on the road and in the field.

The Vario transmission and rear axle – a perfect drive train

Boasting a new performance-enhanced drive train, comprising the proprietary Fendt ML 260 transmission and the HA 260 rear axle, tractors with a maximum power output of 360 HP can now take advantage of the well-known Vario benefits. Furthermore, the unique, absolutely stepless transmission is highly efficient in both hauling and PTO operations. The tractor is designed to reach its top speed of

60 km/h at a fuel-saving 2000 rpm.

The hydraulics on the 936 Vario – very powerful and exceptionally versatile

All hydraulic functions are supplied by a 160-liter axial piston pump as standard. Up to six double-acting valves, which are located behind the cab, are available for applications at the rear of the tractor. All valves are fitted with double connect-under-pressure lever couplings as standard for easy coupling without oil leakage. Additionally, there are two double-acting valves for the front mounting area that are located at the front of the cab.

The specifications for the rear power lift are impressive – a maximum lift capacity of 117.7 kN along with a maximum lifting height of 816 mm.

The lower links can also be ordered in an optional category 4 version.

The Fendt front mounting area – significantly more in-field efficiency

Productivity can also be increased considerably in high performance tractors by performing a combination of jobs simultaneously. A full-fledged integral front mounting area is therefore also essential in the high-horsepower segment.

On the 936 Vario, the front power lift and front PTO are connected directly to the centre housing on the front axle. On the one hand, this allows a very high lift capacity of 55 kN to be realized and, on the other hand, it permits exceptionally short, compact dimensions. The distance between the middle of the steering wheel and the coupler point is only 3050 mm.

The waisted powerlift mounting bracket guarantees excellent manoeuvrability even with the largest front tyres. All

4 hydraulic and electric interfaces are integrated in an endplate.

Two working lamps in the bonnet ensure broad-area illumination for night work.

The tyre and weight concept – adapted for 360 HP

To cover as broad an application spectrum as possible, on the road as well as in the field, without having to haul unnecessary weight during transport jobs, a low power-toweight ratio is essential. With only 27 kg/HP, the new

936 Vario achieves an absolute peak value here.

The other technical cornerstone for heavy draught work is optimum transfer of horsepower to the ground, which is just as an important factor as weight. Here large standard tractors are limited by their tyre contact area and power-to-weight ratio.

That is why Fendt developed an appropriate concept for the

936 Vario. It includes a new tyre concept which specifies a

2150 mm diameter on the rear axle and 1750 mm on the front axle. Compared to the largest tyres used in standard tractors up until now, this corresponds to a 25% increase in tyre contact area.

A modular weight concept was developed to take these new tyre dimensions and a maximum output of 360 HP into account. Weights up to 2500 kg can be added to the front of the tractor, with or without a front loader, and 1000 kg rim weights to each side at the rear. In all stages, the tractor remains roadworthy, within the limits set by the StVZO

German road regulations. The outer dimensions are less than

2750 mm and even at the top speed of 60 km/h, the rim weights run true. Another 330 kg of ballast can be added to each side of the rear axle for heavy duty draught work.

Highly flexible fast chassis – 60 km/h for greater mobility

Growing agriculture business structures lead to a disproportionate increase in haulage work. Parallel to greater on-farm haulage needs caused by larger distances between the farmyard and the field, the transportation of goods plays an increasingly important role for acquisition and sales-oriented businesses.

5

With a permissible top speed of 60 km/h, the 936 Vario is the first standard tractor that clearly has enhanced haulage capabilities on the road as well as in the field. At a top speed of 60 km/h, haulage performance is 20% greater than at a top speed of 50 km/h, and compared to 40 km/h even 50% greater. And thanks to the Vario transmission, this 60 km/h top speed is already attained at a fuel-saving 2000 rpm.

With an unladen weight of only 9.7 t, the 936 Vario has enormous payload reserves thanks to its new two-circuit fourwheel braking system. A total payload of 6.3 t is possible at

60 km/h and at 50 km/h even 8.3 t. That guarantees phenomenal in-field efficiency and a high degree of flexibility.

Integrated suspension concept – guaranteed driver safety on par with commercial vehicles

Higher driving speeds, more tonnage and shorter haulage times result in optimum haulage performance. This requires an adequate chassis and suspension concept for tractors that are used as haulage vehicles.

The suspension concept on the 926 Vario is defined by the perfect interplay between the front axle suspension, the cab suspension and the sprung driver seat. Together with a top speed of 60 km/h and 360 HP and a major increase in driving safety, higher haulage performance can be achieved.

The new hydro-pneumatic single-wheel suspension on the

936 Vario is a proprietary development by Fendt. The double transverse control arm design features an especially large steering angle along with +115 mm to -185 mm suspension travel, the largest available on a standard tractor. Even with the largest tyre sizes and a 1750 mm front wheel diameter, the 936 has a 38° steering angle, which corresponds to a six meter turning circle.

The fully automatic level control guarantees constant suspension travel through two independent level sensors on both sides – even up to a permissible maximum front axle load of eight tons. To ensure that the tractor is easy and comfortable to steer under these kinds of conditions, it has twice the steering power of smaller 900 Vario models.

The reactive steering system guarantees safe straight-ahead driving even when travelling fast on the road. Like all other

Fendt front axle suspensions, this axle can also be locked –

6 swing is maintained. The entire suspension travel range can be adjusted manually, which simplifies changing tyres, mounting twin tyres or adding weights without having to use the front power lift.

A world first: Fendt Stability Control FSC

Cab suspension completely redeveloped

The FSC is a speed-dependent, self-activated system for the lateral stabilization of the entire vehicle. The integrated FSC stabilizes the tractor body by damping side-to-side movements of the front axle. The system is controlled by a characteristic curve for highest steering precision, driving stability and safe braking – especially when driving fast on the road.

The basic set-up and design concept of the cab suspension has been completely redeveloped. Three-point cab suspension guarantees an absolutely torsion-free connection to the cab.

Through the sizeable difference in height of 350 mm and the large distance between the front and rear cab connections of

1250 mm, the suspension can compensate for braking and pitch movements. A central control arm on the front suspension element provides lateral support.

All three air suspension elements are tilted and have integrated height adjustment. The compressed air supply is provided by a standard specification compressed air system.

Compared to cabs without suspension or only a partial suspension system, the new Fendt x5 cab attains the lowest inherent frequency value of 1.07 Hz.

The 936 Vario is equipped with this comfortable Fendt seat as standard. Operating controls for all working functions, including the terminal, are attached to the seat. Therefore, from this perspective, relative movements between the driver and operating unit have been eliminated. This unit is also optionally available with active suspension, which reduces inherent frequency values to 0.88 Hz.

The new Fendt x5 cab – much more than just spacious

Ever-increasing working hours „en bloc“ and higher tractor utilization require optimum working conditions to aid in protecting and maintaining the driver’s health and efficiency.

Fendt has met these requirements with technical solutions in the new x5 cab and has created a new dimension in driving comfort.

7

With a horizontal visibility angle of 320° and 5.5 m² of window area and an extremely low line of sight, the fivepillar cab provides impressive all-round visibility. The continuous front and right side windows also contribute to this excellent visibility. The 145°vertical visibility angle sets new industry standards. The noise level according to OECD is less than 70 dB(A), measured at the driver's ear. The standard specification pneumatic three-point cab suspension system reduces pitch and roll. Fendt has implemented innovative technological solutions in regard to visibility, spaciousness and climate control in this new x5 cab.

Vario Center – an excellent workplace in a powerful tractor

In the Vario Center, the workplace on the new Fendt flagship, all tractor control elements are concentrated on the steering column unit and the multi-function arm rest on the driver seat.

In addition to the centrally located instrument cluster, the control units for climate control and lighting are also on the steering column unit. The steering wheel has a 42°-adjusting angle and 100-mm vertical adjustment.

The control elements for all operating functions are located on the multi-function armrest along with the swivelling terminal. This armrest is extremely variable and can be adjusted horizontally by 80 mm and vertically by 60 mm.

This allows all working functions to be actuated without relative movement between the driver and the control elements. The seat – including the multi-function armrest – can be swivelled 20° to the left and 20° to the right. Each driver can set up his own ideal workplace for every operation.

Optionally, the driver seat, including multi-function armrest, can be ordered with active suspension. This reduces inherent frequency for the driver and controls to only 0.88 Hz.

Conclusion: With the new 936 Vario, Fendt has put solutions to the extensive technological requirements of professional farming into practice.
