Webinar Introduction
Webinar will be moderated by Steve Del Negro. Moderator will introduce the speaker.
Moderator will advise the students that they have been muted but may ask questions using the
gotowebinar control panel on the right side of their screen. Depending upon the question – it will be
individually answered or repeated to the entire group and answered during the presentation.
They will also be told that during the presentation they will be polled and it is important that they
answer quickly as the poll will be open for less than a minute. A poll question will immediately follow
the explanation of poll questions. The moderator will read aloud the poll questions and answers for the
benefit of the presenter who may not be able to view the questions or results.
At the conclusion there will be a brief survey – it is important that they complete it.

Announcement
Fox Valley Technical College, with support from the Office for Victims of Crime, invites you to participate
in a live webinar to discuss what a police department encounters before, during and after a school
shooting. This webinar will give you an overview of Northern Illinois University’s response during the
school shooting they experienced and will give insight as to how they prepared for such a situation. The
webinar will also discuss NIU’s reaction and response during the incident, as well as what lessons were
learned from the event. Attend this webinar to gain an understanding of the preparation needed in the
event of a school shooting and strategies for responding to the event.
Technical Level: All levels
Who should attend: This webinar is designed for first responders, victim assistance providers, medical providers
and hospital staff, mental health providers, VOCA administrators, policy makers and planners, NGOs and NPOs, faith
based organizations & Institutes of higher education.
About the Presenter: Lieutenant Kartik Ramakrishnan currently serves as the Director of Police and
Patrol Operations for the NIU Police Department in DeKalb IL. Lt. Ramakrishnan has served in the
Department as a Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, Detective, and Sergeant. He serves the
Department as the Commander of the Department’s Incident Response Team, and K-9 Program. He is a
certified EMT-B and HAZMAT Technician, and a trainer for the Department in Firearms, Rapid
Deployment, and Defensive Tactics. He has been teaching Rapid Deployment tactics for the past seven
years. Lt. Ramakrishnan is a graduate of NIU with a Bachelor’s Degree in Corporate Communications,

and is currently in the process of obtaining his Master’s degree in Business Administration. He is also a
graduate of Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command (Vice-President). He serves
currently an instructor at the Suburban Law Enforcement Academy, teaching Defensive Tactics, Traffic
Stops, and Crimes in Progress.
