The techniques are designed to increase strength, flexibility, endurance, balance, coordination, and the ability to relax. They are also designed to release stress and muscle tension and to enhance the ability to concentrate. In my class, the pace is gentle and the approach is relaxed, but, as some past students can verify, your practice in this class can build to powerful workout. Adjusting a pose so it can work for you is more important than sticking with a form that is not working for your body. I want to create an atmosphere in which each student can find his or her own way to practice yoga. Materials: Comfortable loose fitting exercise clothes. Tights underneath shorts and long T-shirt are recommended. No street clothes, Levi’s shorts, noisy jogging pants, tank tops, short T-shirts, sports-bra w/o shirt, or mini-shorts will be allowed. If appropriate clothing is not worn, the student will be asked to leave and will not receive participation points. Towel is required & yoga mat is strongly recommended. Class Procedures: 1. Lockers are available for student use. Students need to provide their own lock. Do not leave your lock on a long locker overnight. 2. Class will start on time with relaxation followed by warm-up type exercises, and then we will proceed to the main exercise plan for the day, and finish class with meditation. The outside door will be locked when class starts, please use the inside door. 3. The moment you walk into our classroom, you are quiet! No Talking and no phones. If Ms. Duke walks into the classroom and students are talking or on their phones, they will be asked to leave and will lose your participation points for that day. 2 4. Students wanting to add my course; need to have a current enrollment application on file. Students whose add forms are returned for various reasons are responsible to resolve those issues within the first week of class in order to be formally enrolled. 5. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to obtain the information covered in class from another classmate. 6. You may bring backpacks, purses, or books to class and place them in the cubbies. However, the instructor is not responsible for the safety of your items. 7. Children, spouses, or friends are not allowed to attend class. This is a district policy. 8. No gum, food, or drinks (except water) are allowed in the yoga room. 9. If you stop attending class, it is your responsibility to withdraw from the class at Admissions & Records; otherwise, you will receive an “F” for the class. 10. Any student with a learning or physical need that will require special accommodations in this class must inform the instructor during the 1st week of the semester. 11. Immediately report the occurrence of any accidents or injuries to the instructor. Learning Outcomes: At the end of the course, the student will be able to: 1. Demonstrate and name basic Hatha Yoga postures (asanas), and breathing techniques. 2. Describe the benefits of yoga to personal health. 3. Create a personal program of Hatha Yoga. Requirements of the class: Read the textbook. Bring your textbook every Wednesday for the (Mon-Wed class) and Thursday for the (Tue-Thurs class) There is no talking in Yoga. It is an individual type of class, if you take the class with a friend, you need to be quiet or you will be asked to sit separately. If you still cannot be quiet, you will be asked to leave and will not get credit for that day. The moment you walk into the room, I expect my students to be QUIET! Classroom Participation If you miss class, you miss participation points. Medical emergencies will be reviewed with proper documentation. If an injury prevents you from participating in the class activity, it is your responsibility to meet with the instructor to be assigned an alternative, appropriate activity. Failure to do so will result in loss of participation points. Thus, an injury is not an acceptable excuse for missing class. Coming to class late or leaving early three times results in one absence. 3 Grading: Class Participation Test Yoga Poses Demonstration or Assignment The first day of the last week of the semester – Practical Day (Extra Credit) Mon -Wed 30 days X 5 points= 150points 40 points 10 points Tue-Thurs 31 days X 5 points = 155 35points 10 points 10 points 10 points Grading Scale 180 – 200 = A 160 – 179 = B 140 – 159 = C 120 – 139 = D 119 or less F Classroom Courtesy: Students who do not respect the rights of others to state their questions and participate in discussions will be removed from the class and disciplinary actions will be taken as stated in the student handbook.
