Social Skill Mini Lesson - Responsibility: Being Prepared For Class Perhaps the greatest for delay and unnecessary distraction in classrooms is the unprepared student! Students that do not have the proper supplies and materials such as a binder with paper, writing tools, and books create an atmosphere that is not conducive to a good learning environment. The disorganization of students is a behaviour that needs to be addressed so that students can become more responsible for their behavior as it applies to their education and teachers have more effective instructional time.. Overall Expectation The overall expectation describes the knowledge and skills that students are expected to achieve and apply concerning being prepared for class. Resources Needed: 1. Student Handouts a) Being prepared for Class – Think Sheet b) Summary: Being Prepared for Class Student Activity Sequence: 1. Introducing the Skill a) Start the class by having the students define what they believe in means to prepared for class. Ask the students to give examples of how students can be prepared for class or not prepared for class. b) Ask students to brainstorm, through a cooperative activity (Round Table), reasons why it is important for them to use this skill. Examples could include: keeping class on schedule, giving you more time to complete activities, make class less stressful, set a good example for others, reduce homework, and/or keep yourself out of trouble. 2. Lesson: Describe the Appropriate Behaviour or Skill Steps Suggestion: Create a short Power Point Presentation that outlines the Skill Steps. A. Describe “Being prepared for Class” Gather all necessary books, paper, homework, and writing tools. Be on time for class Present homework and assignments when requested by teacher Use an agenda to write down homework and assignment B. Give Reasons or Rationale Critical for student success academically Easier to stay on task Less likely to fall behind Viewed as a responsible student 3. Suggested Activities A. LANGUAGE - Have the students prepare a written or oral report on a personal event that succeeded or failed because of planning. B. DRAMA: GROUP ROLE-PLAY – Design a role-play scenario around how you want your students to be prepared for class. Create a procedure that describes the behaviour and have the students practice the behaviour. Students should have 2-3 choices for role-play activity. 4. Think Sheet Handout Activity Have students complete the following worksheet questions 1. What does being prepared for class mean or look like when you are going to: a) math class b) physical education c) volleyball practice 2. Why is it important to know how to be prepared for class? 3. How does the skill of being prepared for class help you at school? 4. How can this skill be applied at home or in your community? 5.
