University of Ontario Institute of Technology Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science COURSE OUTLINE ENGR 3330: Circuit Design Course Objectives The objectives of this course are to provide an introduction to the physical characteristics and operation of the major semiconductor devices and the basic circuits in which they are used, to illustrate how the device characteristics are used in various applications. With this knowledge, their use in analog circuits and in particular with active filters and amplifiers will be studied. Course Outcomes At the successful completion of this course, the student will have knowledge and understanding of semiconductor devices, analog electronics and amplifiers, how to design circuits with them, and how to evaluate them in the laboratory. Frequency response of amplifiers; digital logic converters (Chapter 1) 4. The ideal op amp and op amp circuits (Chapter 2) 5. The non-ideal op amp and other op amp circuits (Chapter 2) 6. Intro to semiconductor devices: diodes and BJTs (Early parts of Chapters 3&5) 7. Intro to the MOS field-effect transistor (MOSFET) (Early parts of Chapter 4) 8. Feedback and feedback amplifiers (Chapter 8) 9. Late Assignments A deduction of 50% of total mark per day for each day late will be applied for late assignments. 2 Deferred Midterm Exams: Medical certificates MUST be sent DIRECTLY from the Doctor’s Office or Hospital within 5 days by mail or preferably by fax to the Academic Advisor of FEAS (fax number 905-721-3370 attn: Academic Advisor). A fee for the deferral must be paid by the student if the Medical certificate is valid and arrives on time. Failure to comply with the above will result in an F for the mid-term and/or the final exam. The deferred exam will be either written or oral at the discretion of the instructor. Passing Grades: Each student is required to have passing grade in his/her final exam. A grade of less than 50% in the final exam will result in at most a D for the course final mark (depending on the student’s other grades). A grade of less than 40% in the final exam will automatically result in a final grade of F for the course. 3
