Marquez, MD Mindoro Oriental Council of Past PPS-STC Presidents Advisers Council of Past PPS-STC Presidents TOTAL NUMBER OF MEMBERS: 323 FELLOWS- 101 DIPLOMATES: 203 ACTIVE MEMBERS: 19 CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION The PPS-STC Subspecialty Committee was created August 2008 composed of 65 subspecialists .The objectives are that of creating teaching modules for the physicians and laymen, improving the referral system in the region and bringing the subspecialists by sharing their expertise thru scientific lectures/subspecialty lectures followed by case discussions with exchange of opinions in the management of cases in different Southern Tagalog provinces . The subspecialists served also as facilitators in NRPs,reactors in foras and in different seminas. Our very own subspecialists were utilized in most of the CMEs and moderators are either a subspecialist or the gen.peds member in the area. 6 modules have been conducted namely: 1. 1 PPS-STC Pediatric Forum in San Pablo City on” Critical Issues for General Pediatricians”last Feb.22,2009 coinciding with the 29th Anniversary of PPS-STC. st 2. Neuro Dev Module in Lucena City,Quezon last July 19,2009 3. Nutrition and Gastro Module in Tagaytay City, Cavite last September10,2009 4. Tri-subspecialty module(devped,nephro,cardio) in Puerto Princesa, Palawan last September 24,2009 5. and Hema-Onco module in Lipa City,Batangas last January 28,2009 2 [Type the company name] 6. “Code Red: Pediatric Subspecialty Emergencies In Focus” recently held last Feb.24-25,2010 at Palms Country Club in cooperation with UPHMC Department of Pediatrics in tandem with the 30th PPS-STC Anniversary Celebration. Upcoming module is 1. Bi-subspecialty module(allergology and cardio) in Mindoro in March 2,2010. There are also 6 Scientific Meetings held mostly in Alabang area as follows : 1.“Long Term Management of Asthma and Allergic Rhinitis in Children” last March 12,2009, with Dr. Alex Tuazon and Dr. Julia De Leon. 2“ New Horizons in Gastroenterology :Enhancing GI Tolerance of Nutrients for Optimum Health Effects” last June 22,2009 by Dr. Felizardo Gatcheco with induction of new members. 3. “PPS Clinical Practice Guidelines on Childhood TB “ by Dr. Cesar Ong last August 20,2009 at Technopark Hotel in Santa Rosa City,Laguna. 4.“Indications for Growth Hormone Therapy” by Dr. Jeadene Aragon last August 23,2009 together with PPS-STC Business Review by the PPS-STC Officers and Board and Committee Heads 5. “Enhancing Nutrient Value for Improved Neonatal and Infant Health” by Dr. Edgar Poscesion last October 29,2009 6.“ABCDs Adolescent Skin Care and Anti-Aging Issues for Pediatricians” by Dr. Cyndy Jao last January 14,2010. MSPREST have also the Annual Clinico-Pathologic Case Conference Contest last August 4,2009 at UPHMC Binan,Laguna , Case Study Presentation and 2 MSPREST Case Report and Research Paper Contest last February 2009 and February 2,2010 at Rockwell Center, Makati City. Ninety Percent of the moderators and judges were PPS-STC members to enable active participation in the pediatric residency training despite their non-affiliation with the MSPREST institutions. Likewise, PPS-STC members are engaged in hospital based lectures and teaching rounds to hone their teaching skills for both PPS Accreditted Hospitals and the non-accreditted hospitals,too. 3 [Type the company name] CME activities in cooperation with other societies were undertaken as follows: 1.With POGS(Philippine Obstetrical Society) thru the perinatology conference” Congenital Varicella Syndrome”–a conference held together with our partner OB- Gyne’s last June 28, 2009 at the Paragon Building in Alabang, Muntinlupa City. . 2. With Child Neurology Society of the Philippines,ADHD society of the Philippines and Autism Society of the Philippines through the Neurodev module in Lucena with teachers speech and occupational therapists in attendance at Lucena City,Quezon in July 19, 2009. 3.Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses(IMCI) with PPS National-with our hospital nurses ,midwives and pediatric residents in attendance together with the general pediatricians at El Cieleto Hotel in Santa Rosa City,Laguna last December 4,2009 5. With the Philippine Society for the Newborn through our NRPs ( neonatal resuscitation program )rotated in 2 different provinces –November 19,2009 in DLSUMC ,Cavite and UPHMC last January 28,2009 in Laguna. 6.UMED module on antibiotics 1 (April 30,2009)and Module on micronutrients(November 25,2009) both in Vivere Suites in Alabang exclusively for PPS-STC members. CME was also enhanced by our member’s attendance in different postgraduate courses . Well attended are postgraduate courses offered by UP-PGH in March( 15 members) and September(25members), St.Luke’s Postgraduate course in October (10members) and UERM pediatric outreach postgrad in Calamba City in November( 30members) and February 2010 ( 10members) in Quezon City. Attendance to Pediatric Subspecialty Conventions offered by PIDSP, PAPP, CNSP, CPSP and Newborn Screening Society of the Philippines were well attended by our members.(exact numbers not available) Also,15 PPS-STC members had a chance to attend last October 17-20, 2009 AAP National Conference and Exhibition held at Washington,DC,USA and 2 members had a chance to attend ESPHGAN held at Budapest,Hungary last Junec2-6, 2009. Information dissemination and announcements and posting of upcoming events and postgraduate courses were through the SMS and through our chapter’s website – www.ppsstc.com. where members can download invitations in pdf format as well as links to PPS national and other medical related websites-such as the DOH ,PMA , Phihealth,AAP and WHO ,CDC,Epocrates ,Cochrane websites and Medscape to facilitate our members search for updates in health care . 4 [Type the company name] CHILD ADVOCACY & COMMUNITY SERVICES Believing in the saying “ An Ounce of Prevention is worth a pound of cure” Book Reading or “Kwento Ni Doc”was continued on different regions in chosen barangays /day care centers and grade schools in Laguna,Cavite,Batangas , Quezon ,Palawan and Mindor using the books of Dr. Luis Gatmaytan about childhood diseases presented in layman’s terms . Adolescent Health Issues and Perspective (AHIP) Symposia in select schools were held in cooperation with POGS-STC which were warmly accepted as an enlightening knowledge among the adolescent private students(De La Salle Canlubang) and in Montessori School in Los Banos,Laguna. OPERATION TULONG:The Southern Tagalog Region was badly hit by Typhoon Ondoy and as such the main thrust of our community service was through relief goods distribution in selected barangays submerged in floods in cooperation with NGO’s for identification of the real flood victims. Free Medical Clinics were likewise done alongside the relief good distribution in Malaban,Binan,Laguna,Barrio Aplaya,Sta.Rosa City,Laguna and Barrio Butong,Cabuyao,Laguna. For the second time, the chapter’s Christmas Party was done on a regional basis through gift – giving in selected areas in Laguna(Los,Banos),Batangas(Leukemic patients of Batangas), Cavite(Isaihville,Marigundon ,Cavite), and Quezon (Provincial Hospital and Barrio Apad ,Calauag,Quezon). This is still in line with our Pedya sa Barangay’s Christmas Theme“Regalo Mo,Pasko Ko”. Two additional Bulilit Health Workers group were added and now BHWs total Is almost 7,000. The pioneers BHWs are now mostly enrolled in nursing schools or health related courses. A Child Advocacy project of Calamba Private Schools in cooperation with Laguna Medical Society and PPS-STC was a PRESCHOLASTIC PROGRAM held at Calamba City,Laguna. Pre-School Kids had a showcase of their talents and the PPS-STC members were tasked to be the judges. PPS-STC’s pilot project for this term since 2008 has been Pedia sa Barangay whose pilot community is Los Banos ,Laguna. Monthly Lay Fora by our subspecialists and Weekly Free Clinics are continuously given to this community.
