Animal Farm: Character Analysis
Objective: Students will be able to analyze a character from the novel Animal Farm using textual
evidence and concrete original symbols.
Character Assigned: _______________________________________________
1.
Character Analysis –
*Pre-writing: Complete a Frayer map on the character. You will need to write direct quotes, so
you need your book.
*Analysis Writing: You will choose one of the characteristics from the map to write out in a
formal quote sandwich. First, introduce the characteristic and set up the quote. Second, use a
direct quote in proper MLA citation. The quote must relate to and represent the characteristic.
Third, analyze how this characteristic also relates to the historical figure/idea that the character
represents in the Russian Revolution allegory.
2.
Visual/Symbol: Now, choose a concrete object that represents/symbolizes the characteristic
you have analyzed. Do not use concrete objects for the literal meaning, for example a pig
figurine to represent Napoleon. This object must be brought in to class the day the assignment is
due for an “Artifact Walk”. You must add a paragraph under your quote sandwich that explains
your symbol, what it represents and how it connects to the character.
3.
Artifact Walk/Presentation – Display your written analysis in a gallery-like way on
cardstock that will be placed under your concrete symbol. Be sure to give your Artifact and
Analysis a creative title. Keep your artifact display clean and neat, and be sure your name is on
the front. You will only need your display for one day and are required to take it home after the
class has had a gallery walk.
4. Due Date: Thursday by 10 pm on Turnitin.com/ Gallery print-out and artifact due in
class Friday
*The writing portion of your assignment is to be turned in to turnitin.com by the due
date no later than 10 pm. The document on turnitin.com will be the only writing graded.
No hard copy will be accepted.
