ELA 10-1 Course Outline
Semester 2
February – June 2016
The Senior High School English Language Arts program focuses on the process of communication through speaking, listening, reading, writing, viewing and representing . The main objectives of the program are to develop the student’s skills in these six strands to grow in their knowledge of language, appreciate its value and use it competently.
The above skills will be integrated into the following units of study:
1.
The novel
2.
non-fiction,
3.
poetry
4. Feature Film Study
5. The short story
6. Modern Play- Shakespeare play
Within these units we will integrate media and technology and essay composition. You will also review and expand abilities in spelling, grammar and vocabulary. This will originate from the strengths and weaknesses displayed by student writing.
Course evaluation
Assignments 30% includes, but is not limited to: literary essays, personal responses, oral debates and presentations, written compositions
Tests 30% Includes but is not limited to unit tests in reading comprehension and analysis
Quizzes 10% short comprehension of chapters, poems or stories; work submitted as
Demonstrations of Understanding
Final exam 30% Half is written composition and half is reading comprehension written on separate days in June
Classroom expectations:
Students are expected to arrive on time and prepared to work. Absences and late arrivals to class could affect the final grade. Glenmary ROCKS
Bring only the tools you need and ALL the tools you need.
* All digital devices are to be out in the open on your desk. Please ask before using it, use it for classroom purposes, and use only your own. Failure to adhere to these guidelines will result in loss of the privilege. Use of devices is not permitted on the final exam or unit tests.
Course materials:
For EACH and EVERY class, all students are expected to have:
a dictionary, thesaurus and USB drive. These may be used on personal digital devices with my permission.
A pencil, or a blue or black pen.
Course binder with 200 loose leaf sheets
The text you are studying (novel, play, anthology etc.)
Students will be provided with the following materials as each unit begins:
Anthologies of short stories and poetry: Crossroads 10, Inside Poetry I.

Film Study: Of Mice and Men by Gary Sinese
Unit 1 Modern Drama
Thunder on Sycamore Street. Script style and format, theme development,
Connection to other texts and forms. Formative assessment: reading skills in character, theme statements
Summative assessments: creative response to literature-FEB 17-19, comprehension quiz
FEB 22
Unit 2- Shakespearian Drama The Merchant of Venice
Focus on character portrayal, dramatic language, word play and language use, plot structure of a comedy. Comparison of theatre genres, and character portrayal in a comedy are extensions.
Summative assessments : Graphic essay (multimedia)-MARCH 23, comprehension test-
MARCH 17, Demonstrations of Understanding, ongoing.
Unit 3 – Novel
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
The Chrysalids by John Wyndham
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian Sherman Alexie
plot development, social commentary, character development, literary devices
Summative assessments : Literary essay APRIL 20, comprehension demonstrations ongoing. Unit test-APRIL 21
Unit 4 Poetry
Focus on Personal response to poetry, theme development, literary devices.
Summative assessments: Unit test May 12, song analysis MAY 9, Personal Response to
Literature MAY 11. Poetry is everywhere –MAY 18
Unit 5 Feature Film Study
Of Mice and Men by Gary Sinese. Focus on film techniques, use of angles and distance to develop theme and plot. Essay regarding over all theme.
Summative assessments: Film scene analysis JUNE 6, literary essay-MAY 31
Unit - The Short Story
Focus on elements of short stories; primarily characterization, theme and development of plot. Stories will be connected to themes featured in other literature studied.
Summative assessments: , Demonstrations of Understanding- personal response

Focus on various types of essays, print advertising, Demonstrations of
Understanding, Satire.
Summative assessments : Personal responses to texts-JUNE 10

Order of units may change from what is outlined here, but the basic units of study will remain the same.
Dates are tentative, and may be moved to accommodate school-wide functions or student readiness.
