Cellular Respiration & Photosynthesis
Test Review – AP Biology
Chapter 9 – Cellular Respiration:
 What is the overall equation that shows the reactants and products of cellular respiration?
 What role does ATP play in cellular respiration?
 What are redox reactions? Can you demonstrate using the equation for CR which molecule is
oxidized and which is reduced?
 What important coenzymes do the reducing during cellular respiration? What do they do with
the electrons that are stripped? How much ATP do they have the energy to produce?
 Do you know the three main stages of cellular respiration? What occurs in each overall (what
goes in and what comes out)? Where does each stage occur in the cell?
o Glycolysis – be able to answer above as well as relate this to evolution. Also be able
to explain what follows glycolysis when no O2 is present. Think bacteria, yeast,
cheese, alcohol…
o Ebden-Meyerhoff Bridge
o Krebs Cycle – be able to answer above as well as why is it called a cycle.
o Electron transport chain – be able to answer above as well as:
 Why are electrons “pulled” down the electron transport chain.
 How does the electron transport chain play a role in pumping hydrogen ions
out of the matrix?
 What is chemiosmosis? What is a proton-motive force? Relate it to the
ETC?
 How does the ETC actually make ATP?
 What else other than sugar can be used in cellular respiration? What part of cellular
respiration do they “hop” in at?
Chapter 10 – Photosynthesis:
 What kinds of organisms photosynthesize?
 Is photosynthesis the only type of autotrophy?
 Can you describe the important cells in a cross section of a leaf with regards to
photosynthesis? Same for a chloroplast?
 What is the overall equation that shows the reactants and products of photosynthesis?
 Does the O2 released come from the splitting of water or from CO2? What experiment was
used to support this conclusion?
 Can you demonstrate using the equation for photosynthesis which molecule is oxidized and
which molecule is reduced?
 What is the overall purpose of the Light reaction? What is the overall purpose of the Dark
reaction / Calvin cycle?
 What types of radiation make up the electromagnetic spectrum? What wavelengths make up
the visible light spectrum and why are they important to photosynthesis? Which wavelengths
are particularly good for photosynthesis?
 What are pigments, which pigments exist in plants and what role do they play in
photosynthesis? How is a spectrophotometer used to study these pigments. Describe an
absorption spectrum and an action spectrum including the useful information it provides us.
 What are photosystems? What important parts do they consist of? What are two types?





Compare and contrast cyclic vs. noncyclic electron flow – be specific. This is like describing the
steps of the Light Reaction. What are the products of the light reaction?
What are the three main stages of the Calvin Cycle? What is accomplished in each? What are
the reactants and the products of the Calvin Cycle?
What is the final fate of the sugars produced in the Calvin cycle?
Describe why transpiration and photorespiration can be detrimental to a plant. In what
conditions do these usually occur or harm the plant?
Explain specifically how C4 and CAM plants have adapted to overcome these detrimental
processes.
