Festival!
December 11, 2015
Dear Friend of the Flyway Festival and Commercial Exhibitor:
For 20 years, yes, 20 years, we’ve welcomed people from throughout the Bay Area and other parts of California
to our San Francisco Bay Flyway Festival. I still find it hard to fathom how this whole flyway thing works. The
wonder and magic of the annual migration is incomprehensible to me, and yet I am awe struck at the power of
abundant wildness to quietly and without prompting by humanity, just appear in our lives each season. And,
equally remarkable to me is the way that we who have been touched by this wildness migrate to Mare Island
and other points throughout the “north shore” of San Francisco Bay each migration season to pay homage to
this natural phenomenon and to celebrate together, the wildness that is within each of us and surrounds every
one of us.
For nearly 30 years, I have had the privilege to walk about the wetlands, along the shores of San Pablo Bay, to
river guide on the Napa River/Mare Island and Carquinez Straits, canoe the sloughs of the San Pablo Bay delta
we know as the San Pablo Baylands and delight in the sunrises and sunsets on the Napa. Recently, I stayed
overnight in the yurt nestled on the hillside overlooking the Napa River in our Mare Island Preserve. I was
awakened throughout the night by the searing light of the full moon, the persistent calls of migrating ducks and
geese and the loud hoot of a great-horned owl in the deodora cedar, above.
Last evening, atop the Mare Island Hill, my pup Nitro, raced like the wind through the rain touched grasslands
of this majestic bluff overlooking seven Bay Area counties. As I soaked in the vast landscape saturated in all
the palette of gray, with a filmy fog lightly hovering on the river, draped like a transparent mantle on the
hillsides and city below, I was so overcome with this deep, soul filled to overflowing love of place. Of this
place. Of this sacred and magic place. How could the river and its landscape, have so fully seeped into my
being? I reflected on John Hiatt’s song shared with me by a friend not long ago: the River Knows Your Name.
And, more and more, that song has resonated with me. I say the words, “the river knows your name” aloud like
a prayer. I find myself throughout the day, every day, turning my gaze towards the river, allowing it to envelop
me, sweep me along in its ebb and flow. The river is me. I have permitted it to become one with me. I have
succumbed to its life force.

Festival!
I am beginning to understand in a precious and profound way, that we are one with the flyway, too. Just as we
follow the transit of the planets, galaxies and billions of stars in the night sky, we too navigate the flyway with
those millions of shorebirds and songbirds, hundreds of thousands of waterfowl, thousands of hawks and even
butterflies that pass by and stop to rest, feed and restore, on their marathon travels. We are not the hosts and the
migrants our visitors. We are all – wildlife and human beings – on this journey as one. Like the fog rising up off
the river, the annual migration sweeps us up to the skies above and then, in a flit and a flash of blue or yellow or
cinnamon, it touches down lightly on the land, hovers, alights on a fennel frond or settles on a tree limb, or in an
elegant swoosh, it takes us onto and into the wateriness of the bay and its rivers and wetlands.
Once again, I invite you to join in our annual migration celebration headquartered on Mare Island in Vallejo
with guided walks, hikes and visits to wild hotspots in nearby communities and on land trust properties, private
lands, many normally restricted access sites, national wildlife refuges and state wildlife areas. If you are a land
steward, birding guide, biologist or hike leader, or joining us as a participant in the Flyway Festival, I hope you
will remind yourself of the connection between we humans and the wild. That we are all wild. That we are all
one. This is an unique weekend set aside annually to remember. To be filled with wonder. To be amazed and
awed. To spontaneously feel joy. To connect. To disconnect. To discover for yourself what and who touches
you. To share your passion and love for wild and wilderness in your own backyard with others, like the bond of
those flocks of birds, I suppose. I have a hunch, that like me, more and more, you will find this special place
beckons your soul, too.
Will you join us this year as a Flyway Festival exhibitor? Will you support the Flyway Festival with your
donations of cash and auction/raffle items? Will you tell your friends, co-workers and family about the Flyway
Festival? Will you volunteer? Whatever way you can, please help us ensure another Flyway Festival. We are
most grateful.
Warmly,
Myrna Hayes
