The two films that I am comparing are The lovely bones
and New moon. The lovely bones is a drama about a
girl who is killed. New moon is a dark romance about a
human falling in love with a vampire and is friends with
a ware wolf.
The title The lovely bones connotates something nice
as it says ‘lovely’ in the title which sets a sense of calm
and relaxing things, when in actual fact it is the
opposite. The lovely bones is a drama film about a girl
who is raped and killed. The title sets a completely
different feeling than what the film is actually about.
On the other hand, the film title New moon sets a
sense of mystery which kind of matches the films
genre. The word moon in the title makes the viewer
think of mystery and unknowingness which sets a
sense of wanting to know more about the film hence
why they watch it.
On the DVD cover of The lovely bones, the colours are
quite dark and mysterious which makes you want to
watch the film to find out more. The picture on the
front cover of a dark and cloudy sky. This connotates
something bad or unusual is going to happen.
On the DVD cover of New Moon the colours are also
dark, mainly black. The blackness connotates
something scary and in a way it’s kind of gothic. The fit
men on the front make girls and women over the age
of twelve want to watch this film. The colours of this
DVD cover would attract people who like mystery and
something scary.
The font on the cover of The Lovely Bones is very bold
and stands out to the eye of the viewer. The boldness
of the font connotates something serious because if
the font was more fun or fancy then the film would not
be taken seriously and the genre of the film is drama
which is very serious. It is also white which doesn’t
stand out as much as other colours because it’s very
plain.
New Moon’s front cover font isn’t as bold as The Lovely
Bones but it still stands out because it is kind of a
yellow colour which is bright. This would attract a big
audience of many people because of the font colour of
yellow compared to a black background which makes
the font clearer to us. The yellow connotates happy
things which is confusing because the film genre is the
complete opposite.
The DVD cover for The Lovely Bones has an image of a
tree with birds coming off it which questions the
viewer’s thoughts on the film. Its also has a little girl
running which makes the viewer want to watch the
image attract the audience to this
genre?

because you wouldn’t understand why it’s a tree and a
girl unless you watch the film. This would attract an
audience because its very unusual and mysterious
which makes people want to watch it to find out what
genre it is.
New Moon has a whole different affect on the central
image. It uses the stars from the film to attract and
audience because people will know who they are. They
will attract a big audience because fan of the actors
will want to come and watch the actor in the film. The
people dressed in red in the background connotate
danger because you cant see their faces which some
people may detect as evil or danger which fits the
genre of dark romance.
The blurb of the lovely bones uses very sophisticated
language and is very easy to understand. Its uses
positive language to advertise the film and make
people want to watch it. It gives people an idea about
the genre which is drama because the language used is
very dramatic and mysterious. They also advertise
what awards they have got.
New moons blurb is very similar to the lovely bones
because they use the same kind of language. It fits the
genre of dark romance very well as it uses the word
‘love’ which connotates that is a romance. It also uses
the word ‘vampire’ which is gothic and fits the genre of
dark romance.
The film certification for the lovely bones is a 12. It’s a
12 because of the moderate action and violence used
during the film. It fits the genre of the film because
normally dramas involve quite a lot of moderate
action. I think it would attract an older audience
because of the film certification (12) because the
language used is very modern and for older viewers.
The film certification for new moon is also a 12 which
means its very similar to the lovely bones. It has
moderate language and sexual references which fits
the genre of dark romance. This would attract an older
audience as well as younger ones as well because its
sexual references are not really detailed so it would be
suitable for pre teens.
The spine for the lovely bones is presented very clearly
and is easy to see as the writing is very bold. It has a
picture of the main character which is good because it
makes its clearer to understand that she represents
the film and is the face of the DVD cover.
The new moon spine is presented well because it has
the name of the same font as the front cover which is
good because it has the same effect as a logo, when

The lovely bones was produced by Paramount as it has
their logo on the front cover. This company is well
know because of they have produced many films in the
past. They are well known for producing films for
various different audiences. They vary from very young
children (u) to adults (18), this has made their company
very well know.
The new moon producers are Temple Hill
Entertainment. This company has become more know
since the twilight saga because of their large audience.
they are know for producing films for an audience
above the age of 12 because they are mostly dark
romances an other similar genres.
