Indicate the page numbers where the evidence can be found. Criteria To achieve the criteria the evidence must show reference that the student is able to: Task no. P7 list the constituents, properties and uses of the commonly used dental refractory materials 1 M5 outline how the expansion of refractory materials can be controlled by chemical and physical methods 2 D5 discuss the faults which can occur through incorrect use of refractory materials and describe the cost implications of this 3 Page numbers Learner Declaration I certify that the work submitted for this assignment is my own and research sources are fully acknowledged. Scenario You are competent at waxing up restorations and now have the opportunity to proceed to the next stage in the construction process of fixed Prosthodontic restorations. You will work shadow a member of staff who is competent in the use of the various refractory materials and you will have the opportunity to select and invest waxed up patterns for the direct technique. Task 1 There are different types of refractory materials on the market but their constituents and properties differ for certain reasons. Using a chart identify the commonly used refractory materials, their uses, constituents and properties. o o o o Gypsum bonded, and phosphate bonded Constituents and properties of each type Effects of constituents on properties; refractory’s for fixed and removable Prosthodontics Investments for ceramic work and soldering; surface mould finish and mould porosity; controlling expansion This provides evidence for P7 Task 2 Explain the expansion mechanisms related to refractory materials and how it can be controlled by recognised methods, include hygroscopic expansion. o o Terms and characteristics Refractory and binder; compensation expansion; heating cycles and breakdown This provides evidence for M5 Task 3 If refractory materials are not handled and used correctly then problems will occur during investing, burnout and casting. Describe the reasons why this may happen, include: the implications to the laboratory and surgery regarding time and cost. o o o Manipulation techniques; hardening refractory materials; setting and heating Removal from cast devices; safe storage, handling and disposal; environmental considerations; cost analysis Health and safety considerations; quality assurance This provides evidence for D5 Sources of information Textbooks Anusavice KJ – Phillip’s Science of Dental Materials, 11th edition (WB Saunders, 2003) ISBN 0721693873 Craig RG and Powers JM – Restorative Dental Materials, 11th edition (Mosby, 2001) ISBN 0323014429 Gladwin MA and Bagby M – Clinical Aspects of Dental Materials (Lippincott Williams and Wilkins) ISBN 0781743443 Anderson JN – Applied Dental Materials, 8th edition (Blackwell Science, 1998) ISBN 0632042087 Van Noort R – Introduction to Dental Materials, 2nd edition (C.V Mosby, 2002) ISBN 0723432155 McCabe Journals The British Dental Journal Nature Publishing Group The Dental Technician AE Morgan Publications Ltd.
