1.Tennis - NEVITC 2015 from the Metro Medal Winners
Perspectives
Metro players scoop singles and doubles titles at NEVITC Tennis
Tournament 2015.
Seven Metro members travelled to take part in the NEVITC,
Newcastle, Tennis Tournament at The Northumberland Tennis Club.
Metro was represented by Paul Ryb, Jan Reynolds, Jo and Alan
Turnbull, Brenda Cassell, Lara Green and myself Alan Whetherly.
46 players came from as far north as Glasgow and as far south as
the Isle of Wight. The tournament was extremely well organised by
the team from NEVITC and I would particularly like to thank Steve
Trewick and Wendy Glasper from the organising committee for
making the whole weekend run smoothly. All of the competitions
were very competitive but played in a positive sportsmanlike spirit.
The tournament adopted two interesting innovations that seemed to
work well, firstly we played on an orange size court with only a back
line used, secondly the B2 and B3 sight categories were separated,
which was generally well received.
On the results front Metro had a great deal of success.
Metro Results listed
* Jan Reynolds won the ladies’ singles’
* Jan Reynolds and Jo Turnbull won the ladies’ doubles’
* Paul Ryb won the mens’ B3 B4 singles.’
* Alan Wetherly. won the mens’ B2 singles.
I know we were thrilled with our achievements and rightly so in my
opinion.
Although Paul and I lost the mens doubles final there was one
lingering memory from that particular match. One of the rallies
apparently lasted over 6 minutes and 140 shots were counted I do
recall thinking that it was never ending but amazing fun to be part
of. What a fabulous weekend and I for one was proud of our
achievements! - by Alan Whetherly
A special mention should be given to Brenda Cassell, who came
from three love down in one of the ladies semis to take the North
Easts’ top seed Rosie Pybus to an exciting 6 all draw. The match
had to be taken to a tie break in which these ladies evenly matched
each other point for point. Sadly there had to be a winner and Rosie
just edged it in the end. However this was the closest and one of
the most entertaining matches of the tournament - by Jo Turnbull
NEVITC 2015 Was a fantastic tournament. Great turn out and well
run.For me, like many others, the interesting dynamic was the court
size. Opting to only place a back line for the orange court and not
narrow the courts, meant we had the length but not the difficulties of
being too narrow.
Personally I found this an excellent compromise and more practical
than the current rules allow for. The game was so much more
enjoyable and the rallies longer. Steve Trewick and Wendy made a
very compelling and practical case for interpreting the rules to allow
for such court sizes.
Another important consideration was that the B2s and B3 category
were split. Again this worked well for those participating from what I
could gather. - by Paul Ryb
2. Bowls Report: Weston-Super-Mare VI Singles Tournament
30th April - 3rd May 2015
Now in its fifth year, supported by Worle and Weston super Mare
Lions Clubs, Clarence Park Bowls Club played host to over 50
visually impaired bowlers coming from around the country, including
Wales and Northern Ireland. The event was opened by the Mayor
Cllr Ros Willis, bowling the first wood on Thursday morning.
Lion members from Clubs around District 105SW, including
Burnham-on-Sea, Bridgwater, Cheddar Vale, Clevedon, Minehead,
Weston and Worle, gave their time to act as Markers for the
bowlers, plus assisting B1 players during their games on the rinks.
They were joined by friends, family and members of other local
bowls clubs. It takes a great team, including Umpires from Bristol,
to put on such a big Tournament. Priory Leo Club also attended on
the weekend and had a busy time guide dog sitting and helping
bowlers around the Clubhouse as part of their Community work.
Without the tremendous support of all these people, this
Tournament could not take place, this fantastic help ensured
everyone had a great time. Clarence Park Bowls Club were
wonderful hosts for the annual Tournament and the Clarence Park &
Wessex Ladies kept everyone well fed and watered.
Following the Tournament, players commented:
“Thank you for organising and running a very enjoyable and
successful tournament. It is so nice to be able to come back to the
Weston-super-Mare tournament every year for a brilliant weekend “.

5. Metro Devils Defeated By Belligerent Bulldogs
9th May 2015
The 2015 Metro home cricket season started later than planned,
with the game against Northants cancelled, meaning the visit from
RNC Bulldogs was eagerly anticipated by the Devils. It was one of
those disappointing early summer days where the sun never
manages more than a few tempting warm moments, the sky stays
stubbornly grey and on this occasion the wind made it feel more like
March. The only good weather news was that it did stay dry all
afternoon.
The Devils were keen to get back to winning ways after their game
in Gloucestershire and the start of the day was a good one as the
Bulldogs captain called heads only to see the coin land showing
tails and Dave elected to bowl to give Devils the best chance of a
win. After a typically tight opening over from Alan Turnbull,
conceding just two extras, the first runs off the bat came with a crisp
cover dive fielded by Brenda as the away side looked to build a
solid start.
They did this pretty well loosing just one wicket until the tenth over
when a brilliant diving catch by Andy Law off the bowling of the
Devil’s captain removed the second opener, with the score on 64.
The Bulldogs middle order then accelerated the scoring from this
sound base – captain Tom Rogers looked set to reach 50 until he
was caught by Chris Lewis running from his keeper’s position
toward the gulley. Dan Sergent reached 53 from just 28 balls as the
score rattled up to 185 from 22.3 overs when he had to retire. Alan
and Asif bowled well to concede just 7 more as RNC closed their
innings on 192 for 5.
The Devils bowling performance, much improved from Gloucester,
with extras restricted to 40. After an excellent tea the run chase
started with the Devils needing to score at 8 an over to win.
Perhaps suffering from the pressure that chasing can create, they
failed to build the solid start their opponents had.
The scoring rate was kept up, at the expense of loosing early
wickets including two run outs to reach 38 for 3 from 5 overs. Chris
Lewis and Andy Law set about rebuilding with a 74 run partnership
for the fourth wicket that also kept up with the required run rate, but
when Chris was bowled after a fine innings of 27 the Bulldogs
bowlers started to regain control and slow the run rate. After Andy
Law and David Burt had been dismissed Metro needed 58 from just
under eight overs with Gary Moritz and Asif at the crease, so hopes
were high that a win might be possible.
However Gary struggling to find his best form and was hitting the
ball up perhaps a bit too much offering catching chances to RNC –
eventually he was well caught by their total keeper with the score on
150 at the end of the nineteenth over. At that point Asif took control
of the innings to ensure that a draw was secured as RNC scented a
possible victory. He defended stoutly facing four of the remaining
overs to leave Devils on 168 for 7 at the close.
A disappointing day generally – although if a “man of the match”
was to be awarded this would be for Chris Lewis for that top batting
score, a fine catch and taking 2 wickets for 24.
Devils next game is away to Kent on 7th June while Metro hope to
start their season away in Yorkshire next weekend. Article by Paul

8. The Online Today Project
Online and digital training for people with sight or hearing loss
A new project will provide everyday digital skills to 125, 000 people
with sight or hearing loss or both. The scheme will help adults who
have sensory loss to overcome the barriers they often face when it
comes to getting online and benefiting from technology.
The Online Today project, which is funded by a £5.8million Big
Lottery Fund grant, will be delivered by leading sight loss charity
RNIB Royal National Institute of Blind People with the support of 37
delivery partners including Action for Blind People, Action on
Hearing Loss, Guide Dogs and Sense.
One of Britain’s most successful Paralympians Kelly Gallagher, who
has been partially sighted since birth, is supporting the Online
Today project. She said: “I can't imagine how different my life would
be if it wasn't for technology and the internet. I haven’t any fears
when it comes to racing down a ski slope, but without a smartphone
I'd struggle to get on the right bus or train on my own or stay in
touch with friends and family whilst I'm travelling.
Kelly Gallagher savours her gold medal in the Women's Super-G in
Sochi PLUS Kelly and Charlotte jump for joy after receiving their
golds at the medal ceremony
“Nobody should miss out on all the great benefits that being online
can offer just because they have a disability and that's why I'm
supporting Online Today and encouraging people with sensory loss
to find out how it can help them get online in no time.”
Neil Heslop, Managing Director of RNIB Solutions, said:
“Technology has changed the way we live our lives, from how we
communicate and socialise to the way we look for jobs and pay our
bills. For people who have sight or hearing loss, being able to get
online can make a huge difference to being able to live
independently but it can be quite daunting if you don’t know where
to start.
“Online Today will deliver the skills, training and confidence that will
make a huge difference to so many people’s lives and will make
sure they’re not being excluded from today’s digital world.”
Online Today is open to anyone who has sight or hearing loss,
whether from birth or later in life. Anyone who would like to find out
more about how Online Today may be able to help them, or a friend
or relative, or would like to find out about volunteering, can call the
RNIB Helpline Tel. 0303 123 9999 or Email
