Information Literacy Action Plan

Background
 Bellevue Community College is a two-year community college that is state funded. BCC has the highest rate of transfer students to the
University of Washington among community colleges in the state.
 As of Fall 2004, there are 13,738 college credit students out of a total of 19,142 students.
 Of the college credit students, 57% attend fulltime.
 As of Fall 2004 1,396 of new students are recent high school graduates.

BCC Library Media Center Mission
The primary purpose of the Library Media Center (LMC) is to encourage learning by Bellevue Community College students, to support the
evolving education programs of the college, and to support the mission and goals of the college.
The LMC provides personnel, services, resources, and facilities which encourage individualization of instruction, independent study, and
effective use of resources by students, staff, faculty, and administrators. In addition, the LMC makes available its resources and services to
residents of the community as well as to other libraries.
Guiding Principle
We believe that all students should be equipped with learning skills to become lifelong responsible private and global citizens.
Outcomes
1. Outcome: Identify student groups with unique characteristics in order to determine IL needs and foster collaboration. Initiate IL
activities.
Assessment: List of student groups with unique characteristics from all areas of BCC by the end of fall 2005 and determination of level
of IL involvement.
Criteria: Three student groups will initiate IL activities by June 2006. Students will accomplish one-minute survey constructed by
librarians.
Change: Librarians and student group faculty advisor will review and discuss data from survey to determine improvements.
2. Outcome: Identify courses with information literacy General Education ratings of either 2 or 3 in order to gather baseline data on
courses claiming to integrate IL. (Note: All courses are rated according to general education outcomes on a range of 1, 2, 3 depending
on the amount of time focused on the particular outcome.
Assessment: List of courses with ratings of 3 in IL in credit classes by end of Fall 2005.
Criteria: Comparison of list of courses with assignments received and requests for library instruction.
Change: Inform department chairs of result of comparison
3. Outcome: Revive and strengthen the CTILAC program in order to explicitly relate Information Literacy to Critical Thinking.

Assessment: Organize CTILAC Advisory Group, review past accomplishments and formulate strategies for implementation.
Criteria: Librarians partner with faculty in 5 disciplines.
Change: Continue efforts to strengthen CTILAC.

4. Outcome: Touch all members of the BCC campus community within one quarter of their affiliation with the college in order to
acquaint them with the LMC.
Assessment: All students, employees, and individuals affiliated with BCC will be informed of the LMC.
Criteria: Information on LMC (Teaching Institute, student orientations, brochures, website info, course schedule, student handbook,
faculty handbook, etc) .
Change: Review of LMC participation in student orientations.
5. Outcome: Partner with sponsoring departments of BCC initiatives in order to build relationships with the LMC.
Assessment: LMC participation in 5 activities and events sponsored by other BCC departments by June 2006.
Criteria: LMC participation in events sponsored by Center for Liberal Arts (BCC READS), Diversity Caucus (Courageous
Conversations), Social Science Division (Coffee, Tea & Politics), Professional Development.
Change: Plan for participation in future activities.
6. Outcome: Collaborate with librarians and library staff of Eastern Washington University in order to create an IL program that will
support students in EWU courses taught at BCC.
Assessment: Creation and adoption of memorandum of operation for the BCC and EWU libraries in serving EWU students at BCC.
Criteria: Implementation of memo of operation by BCC and EWU.
