Freewrite Expectations and Due Dates--REVISED
English 10A—Fall 2012
Mrs. Bussey
Most Fridays, you will be expected to present a piece of original writing to the class.
Most of the time, the topic of your writing and the form it takes will be up to you. In those cases,
the only restriction I will give you is that the topic be appropriate for classroom presentation.
Occasionally I will assign topics and forms in order to enable you to meet more than one
requirement with one piece of writing, but usually you will choose your own topic and form.
Some weeks you will present your writing orally and receive verbal feedback from me and your
peers. Other weeks you will submit your writing to me in polished form. In both cases, the
writing you are presenting should be something that has undergone significant work. Whether
oral or written, a freewrite should NEVER be a first draft. Our emphasis is on the writing
process and on how you take those special “golden nuggets” in your writing and refine them into
something wonderful. You cannot learn what you need to learn if you are presenting hurriedly
prepared and unrevised products.
For written freewrites, polished form means that you will print your paper on a word
processor or typewriter. Polished form also means that you will use a header and number
your pages according to MLA format, an example of which I will show you before your first
written freewrite is due.
