Reviewing grammar using the Grammar Links website
During the first three weeks of the term, we will review the simple and progressive verb tenses,
nouns and articles, pronouns and possessives, as well as many writing rules. The amount of review
that you must do depends on how well you know the grammar of a chapter.
Therefore, you should take the chapter quiz before you review the chapter. If you score 85% or
more, you won’t have to do the grammar exercises for that chapter because you already know them. If
you score 84% or less, you will need to do the exercises in the grammar book and then try to pass the
quiz again. You can try and retry as many times as you need until you pass 85%.
When you have a score of 85% or more, send your teacher an email with your quiz results. Use
the following list to help you.
Directions for taking the on-line quizzes:
1. Type elt.heinle.com into your internet browser. Hit return.
2. (choose the United States if that option is shown)
3. Along the left side of the page you will see many different topics (school, special education,
bilingual, etc.). Choose “grammar” and click on it.
4. In the middle window you will see all of the different grammar books that this publishing
company has. Find “Grammar Links” and click on it.
5. You will see the four different levels of Grammar Links. Choose Grammar Links 2 and click
on it.
6. Toward the bottom of the page, you will see five (5) tabs. Choose “Companion Websites” and
click on it.
7. Choose “Student Site” and click on it.
8. Choose Tutorial Quiz and click on it.
9. Choose the chapter you want and click on it.
10. You will see a small window that says “Web Quiz”. Click on the button that says “Start
assignment now”.
11. Take the quiz. When you are finished, click on the button that says “Enter Answer”
12. You will see a summery page. On the left it will tell you how many questions you answered (You
have answered 13 out of 20 questions, for example). Be sure you have answered everything.
13. If you forgot to answer some questions, go back now and answer them. Use the blue link on the
right of the page that says “Continue working on quiz”.
14. If you answered all the questions and want to see your score, use the blue link on the right that
says “End quiz and view summery”.
15. Here you will see your score.
16. If you scored 85% correct or more, then you do not have to do the practice exercises for that
chapter. Of course, if you want to do those chapters you can, but it is not necessary.
17. If you scored 84% or less, then you need more practice. Open your grammar book to that
chapter and do the exercises. Try to understand why you made mistakes before. Read the
Grammar Briefing sections of the chapter to review how to make the grammar and when to use
it. After you have reviewed the grammar and done some practice exercises, return to the
website and take the quiz again. [repeat step 17 until you score 85% or above]
18. When you have a score of 85% or more, email your teacher the results. Fill in the correct
information [your teacher’s email address, your first and last name, your email address (use the
pdx.edu one), and if you want, a message to the teacher (for example, “my first try” or “this
chapter is difficult”).
