Memorial Service
Please join us for a memorial service for our dear friend, Scott Harr
who passed away on Tuesday, September 30. Scott not only touched the lives
of those at Concordia, but also the many people he has known, worked with and taught.
The service will be held in the Graebner Memorial Chapel on
Wednesday, November 5 - 4:00 p.m.
Civic Engagement
We are in the every vote counts season. There has
been a great deal of healthy debate and candidate
pins, bumper stickers, and campaign signs are visible
around the campus. Next Tuesday all of us will have
an opportunity to practice foundation level
citizenship by voting. I encourage all of you to set an
example of civic participation for our students. Our
calling as responsible citizens goes further – it is how
we handle ourselves after elections. Our
responsibility is to support government leaders; to
pray for them; and to put the best construction on
decisions they might be making in the future. Luther
saw good government and good leaders as gifts from
God. May we see our elected officials as “gifts from
God”’ even if they didn’t receive our vote!

AMADEUS
The next production by the Concordia University Theatre Department is Peter Shaffer ‘s Amadeus, one of the
major theatrical works of the late twentieth century as well as the inspiration for an Academy Award winning
movie. Based upon a popular legend, it is the story of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as told through the memory of
Antonio Salieri, a well-established court composer whose jealousy drives him to declare war not only on the
talented but brash Mozart, but upon the God who would allow such an unworthy vessel to carry his Divine Voice.
It is a story of character intrigue, probing the questions of mediocrity and true genius against a backdrop of some
of the greatest works in Western classical music.
The production plays Thursday through Saturday, November 20 – 22 at 7:30 PM, and Sunday, November 23 at
2:00 PM. For tickets - call TicketWorks at 651-209-6689.

Partnership brings Concordia to Burnsville
Concordia University has partnered with the City of Burnsville and the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191 to establish
a higher education partnership that will offer a variety of degree programs and classes at the city’s Diamondhead Education
Center. The center offers continuing education programming across the spectrum, including an active senior center, an early
child education center and classes for Burnsville High School seniors. The Burnsville partnership will offer a wide range of
learning opportunities beginning with Concordia’s cohort-delivered BA, MA and MBA programs and programming through
Continuing Studies, including certificate-based programs and workshops. Concordia also is exploring the possibilities for
offering PSEO classes. The city also hopes to take advantage of Concordia’s expertise in working with the area’s growing
minority and immigrant populations, helping Burnsville become a suburban model for excellence in that area. “We appreciate
the leadership of Mayor Elizabeth Kautz of Burnsville for bringing this exciting partnership to fruition.” - Dr. Bruce Corrie

is working with LINC-Twin Cities and the Minnesota South District LCMS to highlight efforts to reach the next generation for
Christ. This movement is sometimes identified as “Emerging Church” or “Gen X Outreach” or “Reaching Millennials for
Christ.” If you have any thoughts about important resources (people working in this area, particularly helpful books, videos,
etc.), please contact Mark Press at 651-641-8830 or press@csp.edu. We are considering a symposium in the spring, followed by
a fuller seminar/workshop during the summer months.
Thank you to all who participated in Disability Awareness week!
We had a record number of participants this year!
Reminder: Students requesting accommodations due to disability (extensions of time, alternative testing, etc)
should provide faculty with an accommodation (VISA) form prior to academic adjustments or services being
provided. VISA forms can either come from our office or the student directly. Please meet with a student to discuss
what is on the accommodation form as well. If you are unclear about the VISA form, what it means, how they are
developed or how you should implement approved accommodations in your classes, please contact either Melissa
Fletcher or Josie Hurka.
Testing: Disability Services requires 3-5 days notice in order to proctor exams. Finals will require one week
notice due to space and staff scheduling. We appreciate when faculty are clear regarding testing dates to ensure
timely provision of services. Faculty may provide extended time at their own discretion if this deadline is missed.

Mar. 4: April Flanders
Artists are often a catalyst for social change as they are often unafraid to take on contemporary social issues with
daring work. April Flanders will lecture on her art work including historical and contemporary influences that have
affected her art making. Her work addresses consumerism and its impact on the environment through the use of
parasites as a central metaphor for the human experience. Over-consumption is devastating the environment and
the human spirit and increasingly, we are creating a parasitic relationship with our planet. This talk will address
several different areas of interest to students, staff and faculty: issues of art for social change, the overlap of art and
science and the use of mixed media materials in contemporary art.
Mar. 18: Woodrow Wilson Fellow: Anil Singh-Molares: Global entrepreneur, former Microsoft executive,
philanthropist
Born in Holland and raised in Europe and the United States, Anil Singh-Molares is a global citizen and
businessperson. Fluent in Spanish, French, and English, he is a citizen of Spain and permanent resident of the
United States. Drawing on his liberal arts education, cross-cultural upbringing, and managerial skills, SinghMolares advanced during 1991-2003 from managing a Microsoft foreign language team (40 translators and
terminologists) to overseeing all internationalization vendor relations for the company (more than $200 million in
annual expenditures). Winner of the Microsoft Achievement Award, he negotiated all contracts related to
internationalization vendors, giving him a deep understanding of the pros and cons of outsourcing. Since leaving
the software giant, he founded and serves as CEO of EchoMundi LLC, a rapidly growing international services
firm that helps corporations do business abroad. Responding to the experience of many around him who have
dealt with a life-threatening, pregnancy-related disease, he is co-founder and board member of the Preeclampsia
Foundation.

Thus says the LORD: “Maintain justice, and do what is right, for soon my salvation will come, and my deliverance be revealed.
And the foreigners who join themselves to the LORD, to minister to him, to love the name of the LORD, and to be his servants, all
who keep the sabbath, and do not profane it, and hold fast my covenant— these I will bring to my holy mountain, and make them
joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt-offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house shall be called a
house of prayer for all peoples. Thus says the Lord GOD, who gathers the outcasts of Israel, “I will gather others to them besides
those already gathered. “ Isaiah 56:1-8

Here are the dates and actions agreed upon regarding New Student Orientation (NSO) dates and changes for
next summer:
NSOs
Wednesday, June 17, 2009
Thursday, June 18, 2009
Friday, June 19, 2009
Tuesday, June 30, 2009
Wednesday, August 5, 2009
These dates will allow for registration and orientation of first-year students and transfer students. We
plan to make some adjustments to the programming during the day to make them more “transferfriendly.”
PSEO Registration
Monday, June 29, 2009
Future planning
Will try to add these dates to the Academic Calendars for 2008-09 and 2009-10 (comparable
dates). Hopefully this would make it easier for faculty to consider NSOs in their vacation
planning.
