Component in the 2008/2009 HKCE English Language Examination

Dear S4/S5 Teachers,
In preparation for the School-Based Assessment Component in the 2008/2009 HKCE English Language
Examination, a series of free professional development courses (eighth round) sponsored by the
HKEAA is to be organised and taught by a consortium of teacher trainers from The University of Hong
Kong and the Hong Kong Institute of Education. The PD courses aim at deepening your understanding
of the 2009 SBA Handbook and 2007 HKCE English Language Examination Introduction to the
School-Based Assessment Component (with DVD) provided by the HKEAA. Teachers who have
already taken the PD course in the first seven rounds need not reapply.
The eighth round of the PD course will take place between November 2008 and January 2009. Each
course consists of 4 three-hour teaching modules and covers the following areas:







developing a deeper understanding of the philosophy of assessment for learning
building an assessment for learning culture in the classroom and school
developing a deeper understanding of the content and structure of SBA
integrating SBA into the curriculum
implementing SBA in the classroom
giving appropriate feedback to students
catering for different student and school needs
Our programme instructors will frequently refer to the DVDs developed by the HKEAA and provide
course materials to enhance your understanding and skills in SBA/assessment for learning. There will
be time for you to share views, ideas, problems, and practices with peers and instructors. You may also
be invited to take part in action-oriented activities (i.e. trialling and evaluating an SBA assessment task
of your own class, recording and evaluating a feedback session, etc.)
Each course is worth a total of 24 hours of professional development. A certificate of attendance will be
issued to teachers who attend at least 75% of the course. The courses are also open for those who were
unable to enrol in the first seven rounds of PD training. To enrol in one of these courses, please
