Postgraduate Research Scholarships

The University of New South Wales at the Australian Defence Force Academy (UNSW@ADFA) in
Australia's national capital is recognized by graduates, business leaders and industry stakeholders as a
leading research institution offering postgraduate degree programs to the general community. All degrees

A range of Postgraduate Research Scholarships is available and awarded on the basis of academic

Postgraduate Scholarships for MPhil and PhD Studies (2005-2006)
Closing date: 31 January 2005
The University of Hong Kong, founded in 1911, is the longest established English speaking university in
Hong Kong. It has gained the reputation as a world-class comprehensive research university with excellent
research record and facilities. Its teaching and research staff are recruited globally and many of them have
international visibility through cutting-edge research and pioneering publications. It has a cultural mix of
research postgraduate students from all over the world who form an important and valued part of the
University’s dynamic research team.
The University is now inviting applications for admission to read for the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) studies in Architecture, Arts, Business & Economics, Dentistry, Education,
Engineering, Law, Medicine, Science, Social Sciences, Asian Studies and Urban Planning &
Environmental Management. Full-time students are eligible to receive a monthly Postgraduate Studentship
within the study period. The Studentships are tenable on an annual basis and are renewable upon
satisfactory academic progress having been made and the availability of funding. In 2004-2005, the
Studentships range from HK$150,000 to HK$175,200 (US$19,230 to US$22,460) per annum.
Eligibility
Applicants with a first degree at second class honours first division (or equivalent) or above who are
admitted to the full-time MPhil or PhD programmes in the University.

BOURNEMOUTH UNIVERSITY
BOURNEMOUTH UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS
Closing Date: June 2005
Bournemouth University Scholarships are a £1000 scholarship awarded to successful international (nonEU) applicants and are set against tuition fees. It is not a cash award.
The scholarships are awarded by committee on the basis of academic merit to applicants who have formally
accepted an offer from the University. Most Academic Schools offer these scholarships at both
undergraduate and postgraduate level for one academic year.

WOLE SOYINKA RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP
SCHOOL OF ENGLISH

In honour of one of our most prestigious alumni, and as part of its continued efforts in maintaining and
strengthening our important relationship with Africa, the School of English is pleased to announce, during
the Centenary Year of the University of Leeds, the establishment of the Wole Soyinka Scholarship. This
prestigious new scholarship is in support of doctoral research study in the School of English, commencing
in October 2005, for a period of three years.
Wole Soyinka, the first African to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, gained a BA in English from the
University of Leeds in 1957, having previously studied in his homeland Nigeria. A fearless advocate of
democracy and human rights, he has become one of Africa’s most respected playwrights, novelists and
thinkers, and has had over 40 works published which draw on both his Nigerian background and Western
culture. The author of the BBC’s Reith Lectures in 2004, he is Emeritus Woodruff Professor of Arts at
Emory University, Atlanta, and received an honorary DLitt from the University of Leeds in 1973.
The School of English has for many years enjoyed strong links with Africa and welcomed outstanding
African students who have pursued their studies across a wide range of literary and cultural fields.
The Scholarship covers annual tuition fees for three years of study (£8,318 for international students Session
2005/06) and also provides an annual maintenance grant of £7000.
Eligibility Criteria:
• Applicants must be citizens of any African nation
• Applicants must hold a First Class BA honours degree in English or a related discipline and a distinctive
level of achievement at MA level, or equivalent
• Students must wish to pursue doctoral research in any specialist field within the School of English
• Students must meet the University's English Language standard (if English is not your first language)
• Students must be able to commence PhD study on 1 October 2005
We would encourage all students to apply early enough to also be considered for the ORS awards

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH STUDENTS
For Session 2005-2006
Closing Date: 26 January 2005
The University of Leeds is pleased to offer some full and partial Maintenance Scholarships to successful
applicants in the national ORS Competition. The Scholarships will pay a full maintenance award of
£12,000 or partial maintenance of £2,500 for Session 2005/06.
Eligibility Criteria: Applicants must:
• Have applied for an ORS Award at the University of Leeds;
• Hold a degree which is equivalent to a UK First Class Honours degree;
• If awarded a full maintenance award of £12,000 must not hold another Scholarship which provides a
maintenance grant;
• Be commencing PhD research degree study for the first time in Session 2005/06;
• Be eligible to pay fees at the International Fee Rate;
• Not already hold a doctorate or equivalent qualification.
