TEACHER OF BIOLOGY

A Teacher of Biology is required to fill a vacancy as the current post holder
is taking up a teaching appointment in New Zealand. The appointment will be
full time either temporary or permanent depending on the successful candidate.
The school operates an academic faculty structure and Science is a key faculty
within this structure. The Academic Line Manager is the Head of Biology.
The successful applicant will be an innovative teacher, with energy and drive.
The primary qualities sought are those of inspiring and effective teaching, a
passion for biology and the ability to instil confidence and enthusiasm in our
students. All staff contribute to co-curricular activities and boarding house
duties.
The Science Faculty at Wells Cathedral School
This consists of 8 full-time teachers and 5 part-time teachers. Science is a
core curriculum subject to KS4 and the majority of students sit GCSEs in the 3
separate sciences.
Biology, chemistry, and physics are popular options at A
Level with a number of candidates each year applying for places at Oxbridge
colleges, medical schools or science and engineering courses at leading
universities. There are Heads of Department in the three core sciences and the
Head of Biology is also the Head of Science.
Laboratories and Resource Areas
There are 9 laboratories and a lecture room.
Each full-time member of the
science faculty is based in his or her own laboratory.
Support Staff
There are currently 3 full-time technicians and a part-time secretary who also
works with other Heads of Faculty.

Attached is the job description for Teachers at the school. This form is the
basis of ongoing professional development review. Summary notes on the science
curriculum are also enclosed along with some outline notes on the school and
recent results.
Remuneration for the post is based on national scale plus 2% plus a Wells
Allowance. There may be an opportunity for an Assistant House Parent post for
a suitable candidate.

Teaching

To teach groups across the age and ability range as agreed with the
Head of Department.

To ensure that students are taught according to their individual
needs and abilities, following the syllabus and programmes of study
set by the school and the department.


To employ teaching strategies that engenders enthusiasm and raises
the aspirations of all students.
To observe and comment on lessons of a ‘BUDDY’.
Pupil Learning

To be aware of the benchmark data that is available on each pupil
taught.

To ensure that each pupil has a target examination grade.

To prepare students for public examinations and assessment and to
mark their work and record the results as required.

To comply with the departmental policy for marking students’ work
and to keep a record of marks and grades awarded.

To attend grades meetings and parents’ evening as required.

To keep a record of work covered by students.

To set and mark homework regularly.

To complete reports and records on students

To maintain high standards of discipline in the classroom so that
there is an atmosphere conducive to work.

THE SCIENCE CURRICULUM (September 2011)

Year 7}
Year 8}
The pupils follow a course in science.
The textbooks used are Hodder Science Pupil’s Book A & B
KS4
Year 9 } The course followed by the majority of students leads to AQA
Certificates/ iGCSE
Year 10} separate awards in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Some
students will go on to do Double Award Science.
Year 11}

Year 12}
Year 13}
Currently follow the OCR legacy specification Twenty First
Century Science. The course followed by the majority of
students leads to separate awards in Biology, Chemistry and
Physics. Some students will go on to do Double Award Science.
The students follow the AQA GCE courses in Biology, Chemistry
and
Physics. They are entered for Module 1 & 2 examinations at the
end of Y12, Module 4 examinations in January of Y13 (together
with any re-sits) and Module 5 examinations at the end of Y13
(together with any re-sits).
