Books that Nourish
Children’s reading books with nutrition themes provide opportunities to explore issues
around food and health. Themes can include cultural diversity, personal likes and
dislikes, food for healthy bodies and acceptance of others.
Some ideas to start discussion may include:






“What food is that?”
“Has anyone eaten this food?”
“What do babies eat?”
“Who decides what to eat or where to eat?”
“How is this family like yours? How is this family different?”
‘What is the colour/shape/size of that food?”
Other activities may be built around books including:






Starting a vegetable garden or planting seeds on cotton wool and water to grow
Taste testing some different fruits and vegetables
Colouring sheets featuring fruits and vegetables
Cutting out and making a poster of healthy foods or healthy food mobiles
Cooking together – choosing foods that are easy to prepare and safe.
