Welcome Back
Welcome back to Term 2. Term 2 can be a busy and tiring term, often
exacerbated by the onset of cold weather. We have a number of
events this term including a Mother and Son breakfast and Open Day,
and the term will conclude with the production of semester
reports. Term 2 is a wonderful opportunity to reset goals – I trust that
boys have used the holidays not only as a time to relax but also to
reflect on what they did well and what they could improve. All boys can
soar to new heights and achieve success by setting goals and striving to
achieve them.
Ten Tips for Talking to Your Children About Anything
1. Start early.
Children are hearing about and forced to cope with tough issues at
increasingly early ages, often before they are ready to understand all
aspects of these complicated ideas. As a parent, we have a wonderful
opportunity to talk with your child about these issues first, before
anyone else can confuse your child with incorrect information or
explanations that lack the sense of values you want to instil.
2. Initiate conversations with your child.
While we want our children to feel comfortable enough to come to us with any questions and concerns - and thus give us
the opportunity to begin conversations - this doesn't always occur. That's why it's perfectly okay -- at times even necessary to begin the discussions ourselves. The best technique: use simple, short words and straightforward explanations.
3. ... Even about sex and relationships.
If you feel uncomfortable talking about such sensitive subjects, you're not alone. But, for your children’s sake, try to
overcome your nervousness and bring up the issue with your child.
4. Create an open environment.
Young children want their parents to discuss difficult subjects with them. However, our kids will look to us for answers only
if they feel we will be open to their questions. Be encouraging, supportive and positive.
5. Communicate your values.
Research shows that children want and need moral guidance from their mums and dads, so don't hesitate to make your
beliefs clear.
6. Listen to your child.
Listening carefully to our children builds self-esteem by letting our youngsters know that they're important to us and can
lead to valuable discussions about a wide variety of sensitive issues.
7. Try to be honest.
Whatever your children's age, they deserve honest answers and explanations. It's what strengthens our children's ability to
trust.
8. Be patient.
By listening patiently, we allow our children to think at their own pace and we are letting them know that they are worthy of
our time.
9. Use everyday opportunities to talk.
Children tend to resist formal discussions about today's toughest issues, often categorizing them as just another lecture. But
if we use "talk opportunities," moments that arise in everyday life, as occasions for discussion, our children will be a lot less
likely to tune us out
10. Talk about it again. And again.
Since most children can only take in small bits of information at any one time, they won't learn all they need to know about
a particular topic from a single discussion. Don't be afraid to initiate discussions repeatedly, either. Patience and persistence
will serve you and your child well.

Staff news
Mr Rob Peterson (music) left the staff at the end of Term 1. He will be replaced by Mr Dylan Troyhan, who will commence
on Monda, 11 May. In the interim, Ms Ceclia Talbot will teach music.
There have been some changes to the team leaders. Mr Pike will be House teacher for Dunlop as Mr Petersen has left, and
Mrs Patchett will incorporate the middle school team leader’s role into her position. To support Mrs Proctor this term, before
she undertakes maternity leave, Mrs Bowden will be team leader for Years 4-6 and Ms Youngman for P-3.
Middle/Senior School
Assembly is held at 8.30 am on
Thursdays.
In the office, Ms Meegan Hetherington has resigned as accounts assistant, and we are currently seeking a
replacement. This is a full time position. More details for interested parents is available on the College website.
Parents are always welcome to join
us at these events.
Mother and Son Breakfast
I am delighted that we have well-known children’s author, Jackie French, speaking at this year’s mother and son
breakfast. Full details are elsewhere in the newsletter.

Uniform and hair cuts
The dress of the boys is generally good, but it can become sloppy. The staff will be focusing on uniform and appearance
over the next few weeks. Hair, shirts and shoes will be especially targeted.
Please support the College (and your son) by ensuring his hair complies with school regulations (which can be found in the
Parent’s Handbook) and that he is in full uniform, including hat, if you are visiting shops in the afternoon (rather than being
half dressed).

Teaching and Learning
Middle School Curriculum Presentation
Parents and boys from Year 5 to Year 9 are invited to attend a presentation outlining curriculum offerings in the Middle
School on Thursday, 30 April at 7:00 pm. This presentation will help boys and parents entering the Middle School at MBBC
understand what to expect and also briefly introduce Senior Schooling pathways.
Please contact Ms Marie Perry for further information.
Introducing the International Baccalaureate
MBBC will be implementing the International Baccalaureate program. We have been researching this program for over 18
months and, after Board approval, have progressed through the Application Phase and now entered the Candidate Phase of
implementation. The process of becoming an IB school takes several years to implement.
The International Baccalaureate (IB) is an international nonprofit educational foundation, motivated by its mission, focused
on the student. It offers three programs for students aged 3 to 19 comprising: Primary Years Program (PYP); Middle Years
Program (MYP); and Diploma Program (DP) which can be implemented independently of each other. The three programs
help develop the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalising world. The
IB program has been in existence for over 40 years and provides a sound framework for curriculum development.
Worldwide, there are over 2500 schools in 128 countries (supporting over 640,000 students) who have implemented one or
more IB programs; of these, 111 are in Australia, with less than 10 in Queensland.
The IB Mission statement:
The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a
better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end, the organisation works with
schools, governments and international organisations to develop a challenging program of international education and
rigorous assessment. These programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong
learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
The Programs
PYP
The PYP will operate from Years P-6 at MBBC. It is based on imparting concepts, skills, attitudes, actions and knowledge in
the following subject areas:
• language
• social studies
• mathematics
• arts
• science
• personal, social and physical education.
MYP
The MYP is based around 5 areas of interaction:
1. approaches to Learning
2. community and service
3. human ingenuity
4. environment
5. health and social education.
In the 4th year of the program, all students undertake a culminating year-long personal project. MBBC already undertakes
all subject areas required and plans and organises our curriculum in a manner very similar to that required.
Benefits
There are a number of benefits for MBBC. The IB framework is recognised internationally as a high calibre program based
on academic rigor which develops independent learners who are prepared to be active citizens in a global world. It fosters
an inquiry approach to learning so that students are able to develop a deep level of understanding through interrelated units
of work that are relevant and engaging to them.
The accreditation process to become an IB school is detailed and lengthy, to ensure that IB schools are meeting high
standards, with regular checks and processes in place to uphold standards. Being recognised as an IB school with further
cement MBBC’s esteemed place on the educational map. Further information regarding IB will be delivered through
upcoming newsletters.

MBBC Annual Inter-house Cross Country Carnival – TODAY!!
After the postponement of the annual Inter-house Cross Country Carnival on the last day of Term 1, we are now running
this carnival today. As it is only being run in the afternoon session – the carnival will only be for boys in Years 4-11 as well
as any boys in Year 3 who are turning 9 this year. There will be a separate event for all boys in Prep to Year 3 later in the
term. The day is used as both a competitive selection for CIC and District Cross Country teams, as well as providing all boys
with a house competition and allowing boys from across the College to work together in their houses.
RUGBY (Secondary School – Supplementary GPS) – What a great Rugby Camp!
Thank you to the boys who came to the Rugby camp; your efforts were fantastic and if we continue this level of effort, the
season will be both full of success and great fun.
MBBC will again compete against other GPS schools in the Supplementary GPS Competition. All fixtures for Rugby are from
Saturday, 2 May until Saturday, 1 August (excluding school holidays) (most of Term 2 and three weeks into Term 3!)
ALL Year 8 – 11 boys are strongly encouraged to be a part of this fantastic opportunity and to build strong friendships with
their team mates. All games are played on Saturday mornings and training sessions held twice per week on Tuesday and
Thursday mornings and afternoons. If your son is unable to play a Saturday game or attend training, you will need to make
contact with either the Team Manager or Coach before the allocated time. Due to the large number of students involved,
the training sessions will be split between our home field location (Elanora Park) and the College Oval. All boys who train at
Elanora Park will be transported by the MBBC bus to the field and will need to be collected from Elanora Park at 4:30 pm.
Secondary Rugby and Soccer Refereeing – We still need Refs !!
We are in urgent need for parents to assist with Rugby Union and Football (soccer) refereeing. All training will be provided
by either the QRU or Qld Soccer.
Can prospective parents please contact Mr Pike (Sports Master) at pikeh@mbbc.qld.edu.au as soon as possible with
nominations.
