Kawachi received both his medical degree and Ph.D. (in epidemiology) from the University of Otago, New Zealand. He has taught at the Harvard School of Public Health since 1992. In 2013, he launched a MOOC course through Harvard edX called “Health and Society” (PHx 201), in which 32,000 participants registered from throughout the world. Kawachi is the author of over 600 papers and 10 books on the social and economic determinants of population health. He was the co-editor (with Lisa Berkman) of the first textbook on Social Epidemiology, published by Oxford University Press in 2000 (new & revised edition forthcoming in July 2014). His other books include The Health of Nations (The New Press, 2002); Neighborhoods and Health (Oxford University Press, 2003); Globalization and Health (Oxford University Press, 2006); Social Capital and Health (Springer, 2008); and the Oxford Handbook of Public Health Practice (Oxford University Press, 2013). Kawachi is the Co-Editor in Chief (with S.V. Subramanian) of the international journal Social Science & Medicine. He is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the US National Academy of Sciences. Professor Joseph Sriyal Malik PEIRIS Professor Joseph Sriyal Malik Peiris, MBBS, D. Phil (Oxon), FRCPath, FHKAM (Path), FRCP, FRS, SBS is Director of School of Public Health of the University of Hong Kong. His research presently focuses on the virology, ecology, pathogenesis and epidemiology of animal and human influenza and other respiratory viral infections. He has a particular interest in emerging viral infections and in virus infections at the animal-human interface. In 2003, he played a key role in the discovery that a novel coronavirus was the cause of SARS. In collaboration with his colleagues at the School of Public Health, his research has elucidated the emergence, transmission and pathogenesis of avian influenza viruses H5N1, H9N2, H7N9 and the pandemic H1N1 virus of 2009 and more recently, of the MERS coronavirus. He has served on key international scientific advisory bodies including the WHO and FAO, including the WHO SAGE committee and on the WHO Joint Investigation Team on Human Infection with Avian Influenza A(H7N9) Virus, in April 2013. He has published over 520 peer-reviewed scientific papers, reviews and book chapters which have been cited over 28,000 times in the scientific literature. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London in 2006. He was awarded the Legion d'Honneur of the Republic of France in 2007 and the Silver Bauhinia Star of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in 2008. Professor YEOH Eng Kiong Professor YEOH Eng Kiong, GBS, OBE, JP MBBS(HK), FHKAM, FHKCCM, FHKCP, FFPHM(UK), FRCP(Edin), FRCP(Lond), FRCPS(Glasg), FRACMA, FRACP is Professor of Public Health, Director at the JC School of Public Health and Primary Care of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and also Head of Division of Health System, Policy and Management at the JC School of Public Health and Primary Care. His research is in health systems, services and policy with an interest in applying systems thinking in studying how the complex components of health systems interact and interrelate to improve health. He is involved in collaborative work with research networks such as the Association of Pacific Rim Universities World Institute in studies on health systems and training for policy, and is also Chairman of the World Bank Institute Asia Network for Capacity Building in Health Systems Strengthening (ANHSS). He is a member to the International Advisory Board of the National University of Singapore Initiative to improve health in Asia, which seeks to contribute to thinking and policy formulation in public health & health systems development in Asia. Prior to joining The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor Yeoh was Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. From 1990 – 1999, Professor Yeoh was head of the Hong Kong Hospital Authority with the responsibility of the management and transformation of the public hospital system. As a clinician, he pioneered public health programmes in the prevention of Hepatitis B and HIV/AIDS. Professor Yeoh has held many key positions in professional bodies, both locally and internationally. He was awarded JP in 1993, OBE in 1997 by the Hong Kong Government and GBS in 2005 by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in recognition of his public service.
