UMS-WRIGHT PREPARATORY SCHOOL 2012 SUMMER READING GUIDE UMS-Wright Lower School Summer Reading UMS-Wright Lower School requires summer reading in grades 1-5 to help students maintain acquired reading skills. This practice will help increase fluency, expand vocabulary, and deepen comprehension. The summer reading list offers each student an opportunity to enjoy a challenging book and to select books of interest. The list includes a variety of genres including fantasy, nonfiction, mystery, adventure, biography, and autobiography. Although the book list is grade specific, the *Five Finger Rule is a good procedure for making a book selection. To fulfill the summer reading requirement the student will: Make book selections from the appropriate grade level list Record reading selection in the Summer Reading Notebook. Complete the grade level assignments as directed. (Teachers will review the assignments before school is dismissed.) Return Reading Notebooks on Tuesday, August 14, 2012. The Summer Reading Book Sale is scheduled for May 1-3 on our campus. Copies of the required reading selections will be available as well as many selections from the grade level lists. The school will receive 20% of the sales. *Five Finger Rule Turn to any page in the book. Begin reading the selection. Put one finger down for each unfamiliar word. If five fingers go down, the book is too difficult to be read independently. A book that is too difficult for independent reading will be a good book to add to your shared reading list. Rising 1st Grade Summer Reading Book List Students will read six (6) books. Some students will be able to read books independently. However, most students will need to read along with a parent or have the parent read the book to the student.
