"I know what I've learned here (at Schechter) will be applicable

"This effort ties into the core values of our community," said Linda

Yaakov encounters his brother

he prioritizes his family into separate groups, standing out in

front and putting his favorites at the back. When Esav,
accompanied by 400 men, sees Yaakov, the Torah tells us that
he ran to greet Yaakov, he embraced him, he fell on his neck
(squeezed him close) and kissed him, then they both wept.
When the Torah puts many verbs close together, we know that
it wants us to look closely at the verbs, because they tell us the
most important "view" of that moment.
There is a tradition in a handful of places for the sofer (the
Torah scribe) to put dots over the letters of certain words, and
that means that the words have special added meaning. One of
these words is "he kissed him." The midrash Bereshit Rabbah
reads two possibilities: one that Esav kissed his brother extra
hard out of unexpected love, and the other that Esav tried to
bite his brother's neck but was unable to hurt him. After the big
emotional (tear-filled) meeting, the reunion was left at a cool
distance - each brother living in his own place, although
apparently with closure at their much earlier break.
As I write this, the United Nations has voted-within weeks of a
war begun by Hamas terrorist bombardment of Israeli civilian
centers-to recognize "Palestine" (not simple because it has
both non-Hamas and Hamas governments) as a nonmember
observer state, exactly 65 years after Israel was recognized as
a state. The U.S. opposed this step by the Palestinians, who
have specifically not made commitments to dialogue with Israel
on peace. And yet. Israel remains with hostile neighbors close
by and cool relations in other places, despite claims that peace
must be negotiated - even if we don't yet know who is at the
discussion table.
Why do you think that Yaakov and Esav both wept when they
saw each other?
What does it change (to help or to hurt) when we have big
emotional releases? What work still remains to be done?
How can you commit to give Israel a real kiss this year?

On Wednesday, Solomon Schechter fourth graders attended
the first of three "Poetry Pals" sessions. Poetry Pals is a nonprofit organization that brings together young people from
interfaith communities for partnership and friendship through
poetry, spoken word, rhythm, music, and art. Solomon
Schechter is one of three schools participating in the program
for the second year in a row with Sacred Heart and MCC Fulltime Muslim Day School.
After Tefillah at Schechter, our students and teachers
boarded buses to head to Morton Grove. A spirited bus ride
set a positive tone for a wonderful morning. When the children
arrived, they sat in school groups for a variety of warm-up
exercises led by Adam Shames, Poetry Pals director. Sounds,
repetitions, drums, clapping, and the wave were just a few of
the engaging activities that started the day.

When the students returned to the gym, they were divided into
color-coded groups led by Poetry Pal facilitators. Each group
created its own "We Are" poem after the students filled in
simple forms using colorful language to express their "favorites"
in several categories. Here is an example:
We Are...
We are baby blue, midnight blue, and aqua blue.
We are South Africa, Pakistan, and America.
We are soccer, baseball, and tennis.
We are magnificent, silly, and fun.
We are Jewish, Muslim, and Christian
We are Simon, Abdul, and Jake
When it was time for lunch, each school shared the prayer
they recite before eating. Lunch was a social event and the
topics of discussion ranged from sports to shopping, pets to
family. One of the girls from Sacred Heart asked if the groups
were going to remain the same for the next two meetings
because she felt so connected to her partners that she wanted
to work with them again.

After lunch, each of the color-coded groups presented a part of
their group poem for the others to hear. When all the groups
had performed, Adam Shames led everyone in a final "chant"
of the Poetry Pals Rap. There were "high fives" and "see you
next time" as the students left the gym. It was a successful
ending to a fun-filled morning.
Upon returning to school, the students in grade 4C were asked

The students felt that no prior explanation could have helped
them imagine what the morning would hold. It was simply
something one had to experience first-hand. Their comments
included, "It was the best morning ever!" "We had so much fun
making up the ways to share our poems!" "We had so much in
common, even if we dressed differently!" "We can't wait to go
again and really want to have the rest of the group here at
Schechter!"
As teachers, Poetry Pals is an experience like no other.
Providing our students with the opportunity to meet other 4th
graders and share cultures is an amazing experience that goes
beyond our everyday curriculum. We are so pleased to be able
to participate in this worthwhile program for a second year.

Power of One is a program for Schechter 5th - 8th graders to
help them recognize their potential to make a difference in the
world. The program began in 2003 and takes place every three
years either on Martin Luther King Day or during the
celebration of Hanukkah (the festival of lights). The idea this
year, with respect to Hanukkah, is that the program will help to
ignite the spark in our students that inspires them to use their
unique interests and talents to give back to others locally or
abroad. This year, we have several alumni who are returning to
share their stories with our students.
Our keynote speaker will be Lumah Mufleh, the
inspirational coach of a soccer team called the Fugees short for refugees. The players on this team come from 28
war-torn countries. (Lumah's story is being made into a
movie by Universal Studios).
An immigrant from Jordan, Mufleh moved to Atlanta after
graduating from Smith College. While driving through the town
of Clarkston, Georgia, she noticed a group of boys playing
soccer in the street without even the most basic equipment. In
2004, she made flyers announcing tryouts for a soccer team in
several languages. She realized that the players on the team
were dealing with post-traumatic stress issues, language
barriers, cultural disconnects, and devastating poverty.
To help them, she created Fresh Start, a cleaning service that

(Makower) Zuckerman, Blythe (Kupritz) Veltman
After reconnecting with school friends at the Jubilee
Celebration, Sari Steinberg, alumni class representative of the
Class of '82, was inspired to organize a reunion 30 years after
they had graduated!
Class of '82 alumni came together at the home of Karen and
David Ecanow (SSDS '82) for brunch last Sunday to reconnect
with old friends. Sari explained that while she had lost touch
with many of her classmates, a special bond remains. "They're
almost like siblings," she said. "After all, we spent more of our
waking hours together -- on school days, at least -- than we did
with our own families!"
David Ecanow, Iris (Makower) Zuckerman, Ben Goren
"It was amazing how people were able to pick up where they
left off 30 years ago. It was a very warm and welcoming
reunion, and everyone had a great time, even the children and
spouses who attended," said Francine Ephraim, alumni
associate, who came to the event and provided fun Schechter
give-aways for everyone to take home.
"I was overwhelmed by the warmth I felt, and by my sense of
trust and friendship, even after all these years," Sari added.
"We're planning to keep having mini-reunions, and we hope
that more of our classmates will join us in the future. We even
would welcome friends from other classes!"

Abigail Russo (SSDS '03)
Abigail Russo (SSDS '03) recently returned from Mumbai,
India, where she spent a year working as a fellow with
American Jewish World Service (AJWS). "I had an eyeopening, challenging, and meaningful experience that
reinforced the value of Tikkun Olam that I learned at
Schechter," said Abigail.
The AJWS Fellowship matches young professionals with nonprofit organizations doing work in the developing world.
Abigail was placed with Mumbai Mobile Creches, an
organization that provides day care and schooling for children
of migrant workers. If the children were not at this school, they
might be working, caring for younger siblings, or simply tagging
along with their parents to their workplace. Abigail said she
learned so much about poverty and its impact on education
while working with this non-profit and living in Mumbai. During
this time, she also further developed her writing skills, learned
about donor engagement, and worked on an early childhood
curriculum.
Abigail's fellowship in Mumbai built on her previous college
experience. While studying at Washington University in St.
Louis, she studied abroad during her junior year at University of
Cape Town. Part of her experience there included mentoring
high school students. After that year, she started thinking about
a career in human rights/development, and following her
graduation from Wash U in 2011, she applied for this
fellowship.
Now that Abigail is back from Mumbai, she is a Program
Associate for AJWS, working in their Experiential Education
Department, where she helps place high school and college
students on serving-learning trips. These are shorter trips than
her fellowship, but still life-changing and a way for students to
make a difference in the world.
Carrie Glassner, Abigail, and Brenda Cole at the recent wedding of
fellow Schechter graduates Hannah Berkowicz (a first grade teacher
at Sager Solomon Schechter Day School) and Brian Pogrund.
After she leaves AJWS, she plans to continue her work in the
field of International Education/Development/Human Rights. "At
Schechter we learned the importance of thinking about the
world and how to make it a better place, not just for Jews or
Americans, but for everyone," she said.
Brenda Cole, Abigail, and Carrie Glassner in Kindergarten at
Schechter
Abigail's older sister, Rebecca Russo (SSDS '99), is Director of
Engagement at Fiedler Hillel at NU. She is also enrolled at
Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management to get her
MBA.
If you are interested in either the short- or long-term programs
offered by AJWS, Abigail invites you to email her directly and
would be happy to provide more information.
