Condolence Prayer Requests Acknowledgment Meet the Editors Closing Thoughts &*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&* Editor's thoughts... “Brain overload!” That was what I experienced the past three days. Mercy Sacramento hospitals are switching to computerized charting so classes are being held to train hospital staff from the different departments. I may have a talent or two, but”computer savvy” is not one of them. My skill is limited to sending and receiving email messages and utilizing the “cut and paste” method to put together the Cyberflashes. Nothing at all to brag about. So the intensive computer classes I attended were a challenge… so to speak. I am comfortable with the present system of charting albeit time consuming. Accepting the change gave me some uncertainty, considering the level of my computer skill. I was ready to write the lectures... word for word if possible, thinking this was the easiest way to acquire the required knowledge. Noting my apprehension, Henry assured me that it really is not that bad once I get familiar with the system. Taking detailed notes is not the way to learn. I need to understand the concept and become proficient by constant practice. Easy to say! He is the computer expert. My brain is not made for such activity! I could not imagine myself sitting in front of the computer all day as Henry does at work. But then, you don't expect him to possess clinical skills either. Our talents and skills differ indeed. Pr. L. Graham describes talent as “a natural ability God has given you to be exceptional at something.” To be exceptional may take countless hours of practice and training. A musician does not become accomplished overnight. Everyone has a talent or two. One does not have to be the world’s greatest preacher, singer, speaker, teacher, engineer, lawyer, doctor, etc. If we put our God-given talents together, there is no limit to what we can accomplish for Him. We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.” Romans 12: 6-8. (NIV).s It is a relief that my classes are over! Henry was right. It was not as bad as I thought they would be. But I still have a long way to go before I can claim to be proficient. Only time will tell. Who knows that all along, computer skill may be one of my “untapped talents.” Slim chance! Do what you can, with what you have, where you are” – Theodore Roosevelt. Lyn Tabingo Sacramento &*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&* News from the Hilltop… A FOLLOW-UP REPORT ON THE BUILDING OF THE GAZEBOS On September 25, I sent news about the construction of gazebos on the campus. This was printed in the September 26 issue of the Cyberflashes. My source for that news was an administrator who gave me the facts he knew. I should have gone one step farther by asking Dr. Daniel Dial, president, and Mr. Michael Caballero, Vice President for Finance, for additional information. Here is the updated report: Dr. Dial revealed that the fundraising for the gazebo project was initiated by Mrs. Jemima Orillosa, an MVC alumna who works as a secretary in the Secretariat of the General Conference Headquarters in Silver Spring. Maryland, USA. She sent an initial check for $5,000.00 which came from the following donors: the MVC alumni from Maryland, Virginia, and PA chapter; the Orillosa, Shelton, and Thurber families; Val and Cora Moralde; Dr. Glenda Gensolin; and Pastor and Mrs. Abbey Reyes. In a letter sent to Dr. Dial, Mrs. Orillosa said she would send the balance of $2,000 as soon as the funds are available. “Each gazebo” Mr. Caballero said, “costs between P125-130,000.00 (The figure I mentioned in my report was thirty to forty thousand pesos each.--Madriaga) Material and labor expenses for the three gazebos would total P390,000.00 Based on the P46:$1 ratio, the $7,000.00 totals P322,000.00. The balance will be shouldered by the college.” The students, the faculty members, and the administrators would like to thank the donors, especially Mrs. Orillosa, for their generosity. IBE CONDUCTS SEMINAR-WORKSHOP Dr. Milagros Ibe, Professor Emeritus, University of the Philippines, and Graduate School Dean, Miriam College, both located in Quezon City, conducted a seminar-workshop on Research Methods and Typologies, Designing, and Writing on September 22-24, at the M.T. Oliverio Foundation Hall. She lectured on the topics: The Nature of Research, Qualitative vs. Quantitative, and Research Methods and Typologies. The workshops included: Undertaking Research, Research Design, and Criticizing/Interpreting Paradigms. The sixty-seven participants who learned the basics of research from Dr. Ibe came from Southern Christian College, Midsayap, North Cotabato – 9; MSH College, Iligan City, – 4; Northern Davao College, Panabo, Davao – 1; Max Mirafuentes Academy, Tagum, Davao – 1; South Philippine Adventist College, Digos, Davao – 1; MVC – 51. Some invited students were also in attendance. The following information about Dr. Ibe comes from the internet: Dr. Milagros Ibe is a multi-awarded teacher-educator in mathematics education. She also devised numerous teacher-training programs and research studies that led to the development of policies in basic and higher education in the Philippines. According to the Science Education Institute of the Philippines, “she has left a legacy of teaching with compassion to the young generation of math and science teachers” and “her ability to simplify esoteric concepts into lessons easily understood by young minds significantly helped in demystifying mathematics.” Born in Lubao, Pampanga in 1931, Milagros moved to Manila to study. She graduated summa cum laude from the now defunct Quezon College in Manila with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a Bachelor of Science in mathematics. She taught for a few years in her hometown before she transferred to the University of the Philippines Rural High School at Los Baños, Laguna. Eventually, she moved to the Univer sityof the Philippines Diliman, where she finished her Master of Arts, major in curriculum and instruction. La ter, thanks to a scholarship, she got her Ph D from the University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada. She became the Vice Chancellor of the Uni versity of the Philippines Diliman. Ibe assisted Dr. John Cleverley of the University of Sydney in conducting several courses and publishing books on values education sponsored by the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) in 1988. In 2003, Ibe was appointed Director of the University of the Philippines - Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (UP-ISMED).The Dolores Hernandez Lecture Series in science education was started by her during the start of her term, to be a monthly Friday afternoon event as part of the Institution’s extension activities. The series continued through the years of her directorship and long after her term, though much less frequently. In December of 1995, Dr Ibe represented the Philippines in the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) Ibe retired from the UP- ISMED in November of 1996 on her sixty-fifth birthday, following the practice of those in government service, but she continued to work as consultant to various educational institutions and to the Professional Regulation Commission. Presently, Dr. Ibe, already in her mid-70s, is still very active in promoting, among others, mathematics education. Her first name means “miracles” in Spanish and she is indeed a miracle and a miracle worker to her students and colleagues. The seminar-workshop went smoothly because of the preparation and attention to detail given by the following committees: AH Rosario, RF Sotes, Steering; OB Vasquez, GS Pagunsan, BR Borja, EU Pomoy, Program; GT Taping, GD Flores, CT Aguillon, Secretariat; RG Opao, SB Opao, Documentation; JB Sumagaysay, EC Sunico, Facilities and Equipment; ED Belican, RJ Biclar, CP Pascua; Decoration, Venue & Maintenance; RF Sotes, HS Aperocho, IC Abordo, Evaluation; FE Madriaga, ET Dayahan, Accommodation; GR Delos Reyes, LV Pilon, JD Rizardo, Tokens and Certificates. PANES RECEIVES PhD DEGREE Dr. Alejandro Panes, Faculty, Agriculture Department, received his Ph. His study was titled Quality and Production of Quails’ Eggs (coturnix japonica) Fed with Commercial Layer Mash Added with varying Levels of Soybean (Glycinemax ) Pulp and Tricanthera (Tricanthera gigantean) Meal. Congratulations, Dr. Panes! MVC-ROG PERFORM IN SARANGANI PROVINCE The MVC Reach-Out Gymnaires (MVC-ROG) responded to the invitation of the Alabel SDA Church, Alabel, Sarangani Province to present acrobatic shows in their town on September 5-7. The group left the campus at 4:35 in the morning of September 5 riding the jeepney of Brother Jun Pasco. In Marbel, South Cotabato, the group was delayed for a while when Land Transportation authorities subjected the vehicle to inspection. About 3 p.m. the gymnaires arrived in Alabel and were given lunch. After thirty minutes of rest, they rode on their monocycles and paraded around the town. Sammy Colagbang spoke during Vespers that evening. The Sabbath School and AY programs were handled by the gymnaires. Dr. Daniel Dial, college president, preached the Hour of Worship message. When the sun set, the group hurried to the show’s venue to prepare the place. At exactly 7:30 p.m., the show began with the national anthem and the opening prayer of Mr. Donato Iligan. When the show ended a little after 9, the gymnaires saw smiles of satisfaction and enjoyment on the faces of the audience. Another parade was scheduled at 9:30 a.m. the following day to promote the second show at 3 in the afternoon. To celebrate the success of the presentations, the Alabel SDA church members brought the gymnaires and their sponsors to Kawas Beach. Acting as chaperons of the group were Dr. Daniel Dial, Mr. Wenely Cuares, Mrs. Monyfer Porquez, and Mrs. Evangeline Pomoy. Before each of us, laid our lives like the squares of a quilt in many piles. An Angel sat before each of us sewing our quilt squares together into a tapestry that is our life. But as my angel took each piece of cloth off the pile, I noticed how ragged and empty each of my squares was. They were filled with giant holes. Each square was labeled with a part of my life that had been difficult, the challenges and temptations I was faced with in everyday life. I saw hardships that I endured, which were the largest holes of all. I glanced around me. Nobody else had such squares. Other than a tiny hole here and there, the other tapestries were filled with rich color and the bright hues of worldly fortune. I gazed upon my own life and was disheartened. My angel was sewing the ragged pieces of cloth together, threadbare and empty, like binding air. Finally the time came when each life was to be displayed, held up to the light, the scrutiny of truth. The others rose, each in turn, holding up their tapestries. So filled their lives had been. My angel looked upon me, and nodded for me to rise. My gaze dropped to the ground in shame. I hadn't had all the earthly fortunes. I had love in my life, and laughter. But there had also been trials of illness, and death, and false accusations that took from me my world as I knew it. I had to start over many times. I often struggled with the temptation to quit, only to somehow muster the strength to pick up and begin again. I spent many nights on my knees in prayer, asking for help and guidance in my life. I had often been held up to ridicule, which I endured painfully, each time offering it up to the Father in hopes that I would not melt within my skin beneath the judgmental gaze of those who unfairly judged me. And now, I had to face the truth. My life was what it was, and I had to accept it for what it was. I rose and slowly lifted the combined squares of my life to the light. An awe-filled gasp filled the air. I gazed around at the others who stared at me with wide eyes. Then, I looked upon the tapestry before me. Light flooded the many holes, creating an image, the face of Christ. Then our Lord stood before me, with warmth and love in His eyes. He said, "Every time you gave over your life to Me, it became My life, My hardships, and My struggles. Each point of light in your life is when you stepped aside and let Me shine through, until there was more of Me than there was of you." May all our quilts be threadbare and worn, allowing Christ to shine through. Conversation 8.0 no longer runs, and Housecleaning 2.6 simply crashes the system. Please note that I have tried running Nagging 5.3 to fix these problems, but to no avail. What can I do? Signed Desperate ♥♥♥♥♥ Dear Desperate, First, keep in mind, Boyfriend 5.0 is an Entertainment Package, while Husband 1.0 is an operating system. Please enter command: ithoughtyou lovedme.html and try to download Tears 6.2 and do not forget to install the Guilt 3.0 update. If that application works as designed, Husband 1.0 should then automatically run the applications Jewelry 2.0and Flowers 3.5. However, remember, overuse of the above application can cause Husband 1.0 to default to Grumpy Silence 2.5, Happy Hour 7.0 or Beer 6.1. Please note that Beer 6.1 is a very bad program that will download the Farting and Snoring Loudly Beta. Whatever you do, DO NOT under any circumstances install Mother-IN-Law 1.0 (it runs a virus in the background that will eventually seize control of all your system resources.) In addition, please do not attempt to reinstall the Boyfriend 5.0 program. These are unsupported applications and will crash Husband 1.0 In summary, Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have limited memory and cannot learn new applications quickly. You might consider buying additional software to improve memory and performance. We recommend: Cooking 3.0 and Hot Lingerie 7.7 Good luck! Tech Support. My father's forebears originally came from Lambunao who settled in Guimaras a sub province of Iloilo. Here my father grew up together with his 8 brothers and sisters. However, the lure of work in the booming sugar industry in Negros Occidental beckoned and the family moved to Hacienda Dos Hermanos in the town of Talisay. It was also here where his family found the best treasure of their lives which they passed on to their children, the Seventh-day Adventist faith. It was in this setting where father met the joy of his life, our mother who happened to be the school teacher in their church. This is also the church where they got married for life. At the behest of my uncle Dominador Tamares who got married in Sipalay a town on the opposite end of the province, my father, his parents and brothers and sisters moved to Sipalay. There, they settled in Cabadiangan later renamed Goshen in a hacienda owned by the affluent Jamandre family. Here they established their roots for a while. My mother taught in the local church multi grade school while my father farmed, opened a little store, and did odd jobs to support his family. Despite their poverty they sent us with my sister to West Visayan Academy on another island with our neighbors wondering how they did it. But I know better. They believe in Christian Education and will do whatever it takes to send their children to a christian school. All of us three children, Wilfredo, Joyce and Danny were born here with exacly 7 years between the three of us, no birth control, no pills just luck and a little dose of common sense. We might as well call ourselves the "magnificient 777". Just kidding! My father despite his grade 3 education loves to read books. He had even the audacity to translate for preachers who preach in English to either Cebuano or Illongo. And most of the time he did a good job. He also love sports. His passion is baseball and he can talk about the nuances of the game to those who would listen. He played the pitcher position where he excels. When I attended Mountain View College and money was hard to come by and with my brother and sister growing up, my father made perhaps the boldest decision of his life he moved here to Mindanao. It was a daring act with hardly any money in his pocket but with the belief that he had the blessings of God, he moved to Padada town in Davao and lived their for about two years. He came to visit me here in Mountain View College and in looking around he decided that the place was good for his family. The climate was good, the prospect of farming was promising and on top of his list was that education was available to his children. Ultimately, this province of Bukidnon, the town of Valencia and Lurogan and specially Mountain View College and its people were part of his life. Here his wife died. Here his children were married and educated, here some of his grandchildren were born, here were memories weaved into the fabric of his being, here he lived for an unbelievable 43 years almost half of his entire life. Here he established fond relationship with friends that will last a lifetime. All of these were underpinnings that held him up specially toward the end of his life. No wonder he died a peaceful death. He worked hard to send us to school. He never murmured, never complained and one of his greatest joy was when we go home with my brother and sister for weekends in our humble home in Lurogan where for a while we were family again. He and my mother saw all of us children graduate with Bachelors Degrees in college, no small feat for a poor man who laid down his all for his children. I was also told that when we sent a cable from New Guinea that his first grandson was a boy he cried for joy. He did not only support us financially or materially but also emotionally. He showed his joy in our accomplishment in life and grieves in our failures, but his love was unwavering. He was prayerful, fastidiously faithful in giving his tithe and offering and despite his imperfection which all of us are took his relationship with God very seriously. I have faith that he passed away, satisfied with the fruits of his labor. Tatay, good night but not good bye. God is eagerly waiting to bestow on you that ultimate accolade, "Well done thou good and faithful servant enter thou into the joy of thy Lord" See you under the tree of life at the feet of Jesus with nanay on the other side of eternity. It was 2002 at Southwestern Adventist University in Keen, TX when we last met Neva and 2003 for Gwen at McAllen, TX. To Neva and Gwen: At the onset of losing a loved one, human minds will have lots and lots of quiries. Erma Bombeck &*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&* Urgent prayer request from workers in India please pray. We have never seen anything like this. We knew that Orissa was the most resistant and hostile State in India as far as the Gospel is concerned. And we brushed off the continuous threats and harassment we faced as we went about His work. But none of our staff imagined that they would see this kind of carnage....And it seems to be totally under the radar of the Western Media ....Let me explain.... A militant Hindu priest and 4 of his attendants, who were zealously going around the villages of Orissa and 'reconverting' people back to Hinduism, were gunned down by unknown assailants in Central Orissa last weekend. Immediately the Christians were blamed. The cry rose up...'Kill the Christians!' And the horror began.... In the past 4 days, we have first hand witness to hundreds of churches being blown up or burned and many, many dozens of Christian tribes have been slaughtered. For no other reason than they bear the name of Christ. Night and day I have been in touch with our Good News India Directors spread across 14 Dream Centers in Orissa... they are right in the middle of all this chaos. In Tihidi, just after the police came to offer protection, a group of 70 blood-thirsty militants came to kill our staff and destroy the home. They were not allowed to get in, but they did a lot of damage to our Dream Center by throwing rocks and bricks and smashing our gate, etc. They have promised to come back and 'finish the job.' Our kids and staff are locked inside and have stayed that way with doors and windows shut for the past 3 days. It has been a time of desperately calling on the Lord in prayer. More police have come to offer protection. In Kalahandi, the police and some local sympathizers got to our dream center and gave our staff and kids about 3 minute s notice to vacate. No one had time to even grab a change of clothes or any personal belonging. As they fled, the blood thirsty mob came to kill everyone in the building. We would have had a mass funeral there, but for His grace. In Phulbani, the mob came looking for Christian homes and missions. The local Hindu people, our neighbors turned them away by saying that there were no Christians in this area. So they left. We had favor. The same thing happened in Balasore. All our dream centers are under lock down with the kids and staff huddled inside and police outside. The fanatics are circling outside waiting for a chance to kill. Others were not so fortunate. In a nearby Catholic orphanage, the mob allowed the kids to leave and locked up a Priest and a computer teacher in house and burned them to death. Many believers have been killed and hacked into pieces and left on the road.... even women and children. At another orphanage run by another organization, when this began, the Director and his wife jumped on their motorbike and simply fled, leaving all the children and staff behind. Every one of our GNI directors that I have spoken to said: 'We stay with our kids.... we live together or die together, but we will never abandon what God has called us to do.' More than 5000 Christian families have had their homes burned or destroyed. They have fled into the jungles and are living in great fear waiting for the authorities to bring about peace. But so far, no peace is foreseen. This will continue for another 10 days.... supposedly the 14 day mourning period for the slain Hindu priest. Many more Christians will die and their houses destroyed. Many more churches will be smashed down. The Federal government is trying to restore order and perhaps things will calm down. We ask for your prayers. Only the Hand of God can calm this storm. None of us know the meaning of persecution. But now our kids and staff know what that means. So many of our kids coming from Hindu backgrounds are confused and totally bewildered at what is happening around them. So many of their guardians have fled into the jungles and are unable to come and get them during these trying times. Through all this, I am more determined than ever to continue with our goal: the transformation of a community by transforming its children. Orissa will be saved... that is our heart's cry. If we can take these thousands of throw-away children and help them to become disciples of Jesus, they will transform an entire region. It is a long term goal, but it is strategic thinking in terms of the Great Commission. What can you do? First, please uphold all this in fervent prayer. Second, pass this e-mail on to as many friends as you can. We must get the word out and increase our prayer base for this is spiritual warfare at its most basic meaning. We are literally fighting the devil in order to live for His Kingdom. The next 10 days are crucial. We pray for peace and calm to pervade across Orissa. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Please pass it on and help us to get as many people to partner with us on this cutting edge effort to fulfill His mandate: Go and make disciples of all nations....Prayer works!
