Imagination Estimation
This is a way for students to explore estimation. Use your imagination on where you will use estimation in real
life, by using subtraction, addition, multiplication, and division.
Introduction
This WebQuest will show you how estimation is important in everyday life. You will use your Imagination to solve
problems for your friend, Shrek’s, party. We will you all four types of estimation front-end estimation, clustering,
rounding, and compatible numbers.

Task
Use your imaginations to discover places for the use of estimation. Shrek, the ogre, is planning a party for his
fairytale friends. He needs to use estimation for his party to make sure he has enough supplies and food. You will
be exploring different sites with Shrek to work on his and your estimation. He needs to work on all of his
estimation strategies, front-end estimation, compatible numbers, clustering, and rounding. You will need to go
through the web to practice estimation.

1. Shrek has invited many of his fairytale friends. He invites about the same number of each type of fairytale friends to make it fair. He wants to
estimate how many friends will be there all together. Using this website
http://www.teachers.ash.org.au/jeather/maths/dictionary.html determine the meaning of clustering estimation and
then help Shrek to estimate his about of friends invited. Shrek invited 124 fairies, 128 dragons, 121 royals, 125 townspeople, and 127 other
characters.
2. Shrek now needs to decide how much swamp stew he will need to feed all of his guests. For his soup he will need 125 carrots, 244 potatoes, 94
onions, 81 eggplants, and 77 cabbages. Using this website

number estimation to determine how many vegetables will he need all together for his stew?
3. Shrek will also need to use rounding estimation to determine how much money his supplies will cost for his party. He will need 625 bowls costing
him $49, 625 spoons costing him $17, 625 napkins costing him $6, 625 cups costing him $75. Using this website,
www.321know.com/est27ax2.htm help him round to the nearest ten to find how much supplies will cost.
4. Fiona wants to make sure the swamp is clean for the big party she wants to use front-end estimation to determine how long it will take her to clean
the whole swamp. She know it will take her 62 minutes to clean the living room, 83 minutes to clean the kitchen, 24 minutes to clean the bathroom,
35 minutes to clean the bedroom, and 97 minutes to clean the outside. Using this website www.321know.com/est73ax2.htm
determine how long it will take her to clean the swamp using front-end estimation.
