Phases of Learning / Transfer of Learning
Background
What are the 3 phases of learning? - Cognitive / Associative / Autonomous
What is Transfer of Learning?



The transfer of a skill from one situation to another. (Skill to skill)
The transfer of a thought process or "cognitive process" to a practical situation.
(Theory to practice)
The transfer of a training process to a competitive game process. (Training to
game)
How does this affect you as a sports-person?
Task 1: Complete the following grid by filling in 4 skills from each phase which can
be applied to you. Pick any sport or combination of sports to do this.
Discuss which methods of improvement would you use to take a skill from the
cognitive phase to the autonomous phase? Does everyone in your group agree? Do
you all learn in similar ways? What do you think are the most effective ways of
learning the skills? How could you make best use of a skill which is in your
autonomous phase of learning?
