Nota Cultural (p84): Latin American high schools typically do not sponsor organized
sports teams. Students who may want to take a more active part in sports can do so by
joining clubs and associations outside of school.
Introduce new vocabulary pp. 82 & 83
Core instruction:
1. Review “Me gusta(n) and ¿Te gusta(n)? by asking and answering questions with
vocablary from Chapter 2.
2. Introduce the new vocabulary. Model the pronunciation of each expression using
“A mí me gusta” as I point to the appropriate pictures.
3. Continue by saying “A mí me gusta” with one of the new expressions. Call on a
volunteer to act out the expression. Continue with all of the new expressions.
4. Call on students or pairs of students to act out expressions as you say “A él / ella
le gusta” or A ellos/ellas les gusta(n)… etc.

Gustar with infinitives
Core Instruction:
En inglés
In English, infinitives do not have any special endings, but they almost always have the
word “to” in front of them.

In Spanish, infinitives always en in –ar, -er, or –ir.

1. Go over En ingles with students. Have volunteers write examples of English
sentences using the infinitive on the board.
2. Write a few sentences with Me gusta plus a noun on the board. Then add the
sentence Me gusta comer below them.
3. Go over point three.
Pages 86 & 87: Round Robin: Exercises 7, 8, & 9
Page 88: Pronouns after prepositions
Core instruction:
1. Go over ¿Te acuerdas? With students.
2. Go over point 1. On the board, create a chart with ten rows. Title the first
column: Subject pronouns and have students list the pronouns they would use
with the verb ser. Title the second column “Pronouns with gustar.” Have
students add these pronouns to the chart. Remind them that these are the
pronouns they would use to tell what various people are like.
3. Go over point 2. Add a third column to the chart: “Pronouns after prepositions”
4. Go over points 3 and 4. Have students copy the pronoun chart into their
notebooks leaving space to add columns as they learn more pronouns.

Give students time to figure out which word they would use in Ex 11, then share with
class.

Present tense of querer with infinitives
Core instruction:
1. Review the use of ser by having students give example sentences using all the
subject pronouns.
2. Introduce querer by giving examples using several pronouns. Go over point 1
with students. Do students see any simlarities between the endings of the forms
of ser and the endings of the forms of querer?
3. Tell students “Quiero leer una revista. ¿Y tú? ¿Qué quieres hacer? Have several
volunteers tell what they would like to do, using querer. Then go ove point 2 with
students.

Introduce the new vocabulary and expressions
Core Instruction:
1. Model the pronunciation of the new vocabulary and expressions
2. Model the expression, “¿Qué te gusta hacer los fines de semana? And some
possisble answers: Me gusta bailar. Me gusta r a lo piscina. Then ask students,
¿Qué te gusta hacer los fines de semana?
3. Repeat the process with the questions ¿Qué te gusta hacer cuando hace buen
tiempo? ¿Qué te gusta hacer cuando hace mal tiempo? etc.

Present tense of regular –ar verbs. (page 98)
In English, most verbs have only two forms in the present tense so subject pronouns can’t
be left out.

In Spanish, the verb ending tells you who the subject is.

Core instruction:
1. Go over point 1 with students. Ask them to suggest other verbs that they have
learned, and write the infinitives on the board.
2. Go over point 2 with students. Model the pronunciation of each form of cantar
for students. Then ask a volunteer to conjugate one of the infinitives on the
board, using a given pronoun. Continue until every student has provided at least
one form of a verb.
3. Project: Have students write the forms of cantar in their notes.
Round Robin: Pages 98 & 99: Exercises 26, 27, & 28

Core Instruction:
1. Go over point 1 with students. Ask if they remember the other irregular verb they
have learned (ser). Have students copy the forms of “ir” into their
notebooks/computers (notes/verbs)
2. Practice the forms of “ir” by asking students how often they go places (al parquet,
a la picina, al colegio, etc.)
3. Go over point 2. Project: Have students copy the forms of “jugar” into their
notes/verbs. Then practice the forms by asking and answering questions about
how often they play various sports.
4. Go over point 3 with students.

Core Instruction:
1. Go over point 1 and explain “hace” and weather expressions.
2. Go over point 2 with students: the verb llover/llueve, nevar/nieva
Round Robin: Page 103: Ex 35 (L/C), 36, and 37.
Telenovela: Read pages 104 & 105:
1. Have students scan the pictures of the Novela. Without reading the text, have
students predict what they think is happening in the episode. Have them give
reasons to support their prediction.
2. Play the video stopping after scene four. Ask comprehension questions. Were
any of the student predictions correct? Are students surprised at the plot?
3. Play the rest of the video. Ask comprehension questions. In what ways did the
plot take on a twist that the students had not inferred from the text images?
4. In pairs, have students discuss the answeres for the ¿Comprendes? Questions on
page 105. Discuss their answers in class.
