BASICS OF REAL ESTATE MATH
This course is to provide the Basic Concepts of Mathematics and its application for use in the Real Estate
Profession. This first chapter is rather elementary in nature, but might provide some insights into the new math
learning concepts employed by the education industry.
This course will only deal with Basic Mathematics. The course does not discuss Algebra or Geometry. Those of
you well versed in these areas will undoubtedly utilize these forms but this course will not.
Assumptions – This course assumes that you know how to:
Add and Subtract
Multiply and Divide
Be somewhat familiar with the use of percentages
Use a calculator including the “ % “ button

Calculator Basics
Clearing Your Calculator: Before you start a calculator equation, hit the “On/Clear” button TWICE.
This will clear any answers or material you currently have on your calculator. All your previous work will be
erased from the calculator. The calculator will show “ 0 “. You should do this before you start any new
equation.
Clearing Your Equation: If you are entering a number into your calculator and you make a mistake, hit the
“On/Clear button ONCE. This will erase the wrong numbers you entered into the calculator and retain the
numbers that were already entered into the calculator.
Example: You are trying to add 22 + 22. You first enter 22 and hit the plus key. 22 shows on your
calculator. Then you make a mistake and put 23 on the calculator. Hit the “On/Clear” key ONCE. Your
calculator will still show the first correct number 22. If you hit the “On/Clear” key again (TWICE), the
calculator will show “ 0 “.

Basic Concepts - Addition
Addition: Adding two numbers will cause the total number to increase:
22 + 22 = 44
Calculator Use: Put in 22. Hit the Plus ( + ) key. Put in 22. Hit the Equal (=) key. Answer is 44.
Note – Whenever you hit the Plus key or the Equal key, the number you entered in prior is registered on your
calculator. You must hit either key to enter your second number into the equation.
Example: If you put in the number 22 and then hit 22 before hitting the Plus key, the calculator will show 2222.
So, put in the first number, hit Plus (+), then enter the second number, and hit the Equal (=) key.
Problem Solving:
55 + 55 = ?
**************************************************************************
Answer: 110 - Put in 55, hit the Plus key, put in 55, and hit the Equal (=) key.

Basic Concepts - Subtraction
The opposite of addition is subtraction.
Subtraction: Subtracting one number from another will cause the total to decrease:
44 - 22 = 22
Calculator Use: Put in 44. Hit the subtraction/minus ( -) key. Put in 22. Hit the Equal key. Answer is 22.
Note – Whenever you hit the Minus key or the Equal key, the number you entered in prior is registered on your
calculator. You must hit either button to enter your second number into the equation.
Example: If you put in the number 44 and then hit 22 before hitting the Minus key, the calculator will show
4422.
Problem Solving:
110 - 55 = ?
**************************************************************************
Answer: 55
Put in 110, hit the Minus (-) key, put in 55, and hit the Equal (=) key.

Basic Math Concepts – Multiplication
Multiplication: Multiplying numbers TIMES each other increases the number.
22 X
22 = 484
Calculator Use: Put in 22. Hit the multiplication ( X ) key. Put in 22. Hit the Equal (=) key. Answer is 484.
Note – Whenever you hit the Multiplication ( X ) key or the Equal key, the number you entered in prior is
registered on your calculator. You must hit either key to enter your second number into the equation.
Example: If you put in the number 22 and then hit 22 before hitting the multiplication ( X ) key, the calculator
