Hello everyone,
My name is Lynn Amos and I am the Little League Commissioner for WCWAA (Wesley Chapel Weddington
Athletic Association) and am honored to welcome you to the 2009 North Carolina Little League 9 Year Old
State Championship being held in Weddington, North Carolina. We are so excited to have the opportunity to
host the first ever 9 year old tournament at our facility and look forward to your team joining us.
We have many dedicated volunteers who have worked very hard to help get our park in “top notch” condition.
I think you will observe that, first hand, in our newest lower complex which your game will be played. We’re
very proud of what we have accomplished and hope you will leave knowing that you have added another
chapter in our history as being one of the first time participants of the 9 year old North Carolina State
Championship held at WCWAA.
Due to our size and sheer numbers of members, 1000 plus in baseball this Spring alone, our website at
wcwaa.org has become a vital tool for communication throughout our regular season by posting scores,
schedule changes, announcements, etc. I would encourage you to take a moment to browse our website as
this will be our means of communicating with those of you with access to a computer on weather delays,
brackets, etc as it relates to this STATE tournament.
If there is anything we can do to make you visit more pleasant, please do not hesitate to contact us. I want to
once again welcome you to our “park” and “our community”.
Sincerely,
Lynn Amos

WESLEY CHAPEL WEDDINGTON ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION

A LOOK AT US…..
WCWAA (Wesley Chapel Weddington Athletic Association) is a blend of several area
communities including not only Weddington but Marvin and Wesley Chapel. Our
association is fortunate to be a part of one of the fastest, growing counties in North
Carolina. Established in 1842, Union County provides a unique blend of rural and
metropolitan lifestyles with its convenience to Charlotte. Situated in the south central
piedmont area of North Carolina the population is estimated at 155,000 with
approximately 643 square miles of land.
Sports, and in particular baseball, have been around the towns of Wesley Chapel,
Marvin and Weddington for many years. In the early 1960’s, local sports were
organized by the area Men’s club of Weddington United Methodist Church. Then in
the fall of 1980 a group of local men formed a new civic club, The Weddington Optimist
Club. This club was organized for civic and sports activities. The first area baseball was
played in a Union County league that included the area communities of Waxhaw and
Prospect.
Then in February of 1983, the sports oriented members of the Optimist Club formed a
new organization called the Wesley Chapel-Weddington Athletic Association dedicated
exclusively to youth sports. That first year there were approximately five baseball
teams from Tee Ball to 12 year olds sanctioned by Dixie Youth Baseball.
In 1987, 16 acres was purchased at our current site on Highway 84 halfway between
Weddington and Wesley Chapel. Although WCWAA had grown it was not sufficiently
organized to make such a purchase so the Weddington Optimist Club stepped back into
the picture. With the help of ten optimist members the land was purchased and
Weddington Optimist Park was a reality.
Construction then started in Nov. 1988 on a Tee-ball, Coach Pitch and Majors field.
Weddington Optimist Park had its first Opening Day ceremony on April 24, 1990. The
spring of 1990 WCWAA switched from Dixie Youth and became affiliated with Little
League Baseball.
In 1994 the Optimist Club purchased 3 ½ acres from the Church next door, which gave
us room to build the Minors and Softball fields. The park spanned 19 ½ acres.
But again WCWAA was facing rapid growth. The influx of new families to the western
part of Union County resulted in an increased need for more sports facilities and
another land search was undertaken. After looking at several area properties, the 34
acre parcel next to the park was purchased from a local developer in September 2001.
The park is now 53 acres.
Since 2001, our park and particularly our baseball facilities have gone through
tremendous change. Through the work of many volunteers and various fund raising
events we were able to begin construction on a new baseball complex on the lower
portion of Optimist Park. The fields being used for our State Tournament were
officially opened in 2006. Our recently completed spring season had a total of 94
teams and over 1100 players in our Tee Ball, Machine Pitch, Coach Pitch, Minors,
Majors and Challenger divisions.
We’re very proud of what has been accomplished and hope you will leave us knowing
that you too will add another chapter in our history as being a 1st time participant of our
hosting the first ever 9 year old North Carolina State Championship.
Welcome to the Queen City!
Charlotte, North Carolina’s largest city, is located in
Mecklenburg County and has a metro population over 2 million people. The 20th largest
city in the United States, Charlotte is one of the fastest growing areas in the country with an
average of 20,000 newcomers each year. A refreshing mix of history and modern
development, the city is growing in multi-culturalism. Charlotte is also the nation’s second
largest banking center and the headquarters for several Fortune 500 companies.
The Charlotte metro area lays claim to six counties in North and South Carolina. The main
interstates through Charlotte are I-77, I-85, I-277and the I-485 outer belt. If possible,
avoid all of these roads during rush hour as many people commute in-town from the
various suburbs. Please be wary of the roads in Charlotte, many have multiple names and
others will change names at an intersection.
The first verified gold find in the United States occurred in Charlotte around 1799. Reed’s
Goldmine, the nation’s first goldmine, operated here until 1912.
Charlotte played a critical role during the Revolutionary War as an encampment site for both
the American and British main armies. During a series of skirmishes between British troops
and feisty Charlotteans the village earned the lasting nickname "Hornets Nest" from a
frustrated Lord General Charles Cornwallis. Many Charlotte landmarks still reflect this
commitment to independence: Freedom Park, Freedom Drive, Independence Boulevard,
Independence Park, Independence High School, etc.
A branch of the US mint was established here in 1837, but now stands as an intriguing
museum of fine art, craft, and design.
Charlotte is home to the NFL’s Carolina Panthers, Charlotte Bobcats, and the AAA affiliate of
the MLB’s Chicago White Sox, the Charlotte Knights. Charlotte also lays claim to the Lowe’s
Motor Speedway, home of the Nextel All-Star Race and Coca-Cola 600.
