Punnett square mastery project Name ____________________ Our unit on heredity relies heavily on the Punnett square. The Punnett square is a great tool to predict likely offspring genotypes whenever two organisms have children. It applies to many traits we observe, but not all of them. You will have to demonstrate that you have achieved proficiency or mastery of Punnett squares. You have several options to do this. Over the coming days, you will have time to practice your Punnett square skills and gather evidence that you are proficient or masterful in using a Punnett square. The evidence can take the form of worksheets, practice problems from notes, or your own Punnett square problems that you create. You must collect this evidence and attach a written explanation that explains how you have achieved your goal and that refers to your evidence. Punnett square skills involve two parts: 1. Know what makes up a Punnett square (what do all the parts show you and where do you put information). 2. Use a Punnett square to find the expected genotypic/phenotypic ratios. On the back of this sheet you will find a rubric that explains in detail how to demonstrate proficiency and mastery for each skill. In summary, next week you will turn in a packet that includes: Multiple examples (at least 2) of you using Punnett squares Multiple examples (at least 2) of your understanding of the parts of a Punnett square A one page explanation for each part of the project showing how well you understand Punnett squares and where you think your understanding is at, based on the rubric. This sheet, with the back filled out. This project is due January 25th. Mastery Skill 1a: Parts of Can use an Punnett square alternative (5 points) representation of inheritence and relate its parts to a Punnett square Skill 1b: Create a Given a two trait Punnett square Punnett square, (5 points) student can deduce the genotype and phenotype of parents. Proficient Can correctly label all parts of a Punnett square Skill 2: Use of Punnett square (10 points) Can correctly identify the predicted genotypic and phenotypic ratios(percents) of offspring in simple dominance traits Can correctly identify predicted genotypic and phenotypic ratios of offspring in incomplete dominance, codominance, and two trait crosses Given genotypes of parents, can correctly fill out a Punnett square Does not meet Some parts are mislabeled. Shows confusion about what Punnett square represents. Can not create a Punnett square given the genotypes of parents. Unable to identify predicted genotypic and phenotypic ratios of offspring in simple dominance traits Complete the following before turning in. Skill 1a: I believe I am at the _________________ level. Skill 1b: I believe I am at the _________________ level. Skill 2: I believe I am at the _________________ level. Your score is based on how accurately you demonstrate your level.
