MSW Extended Degree Program Addendum
As you prepare to begin your degree at the UW School of Social Work, we want to make sure you are
informed about the following aspects of the MSW Extended Degree Program. This document will be
particularly helpful to those incoming students who are relatively unfamiliar with the MSW Extended
Degree Program.

Program Length: EDP students earn their degrees in 9-11 consecutive quarters, including summer
quarters. It is not possible to complete the program in less than 9 consecutive quarters unless students
have approved transfer credits. Extending the program beyond 11 quarters, however, is an option.

Credit Load: EDP students take an average of 7 credits per quarter, with actual credit loads varying
from quarter to quarter. The MSW degree requires 75 credits, though some students graduate with
additional credits.

Class Schedules: EDP students are admitted to the program on an evening schedule or a
Friday/Saturday schedule. On the EDP model program of study, students generally take two classes
or one to two classes plus practicum per quarter. On the evening schedule, each class meets one
evening a week from 6-8:50pm throughout the quarter. Core required evening courses are generally
offered on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, with exceptions. On a Friday/Saturday schedule, each
class meets either four full Fridays 9:30am-4:30pm or four full Saturdays 9am-4pm. Core required
Friday/Saturday courses are generally offered on paired Fridays and Saturdays. EDP electives are
typically offered on Thursday evenings (6-8:50pm weekly) and Saturdays (9am-4pm for four
sessions). Students may take electives on either schedule.

Concentrations: The MSW Extended Degree Program offers two advanced direct practice
concentrations: 1) Multigenerational Practice with Children, Families and Elders, and 2) Integrative
Health-Mental Health Advanced Practice. EDP concentration choices and schedule options vary
from year to year depending on a variety of factors, including student interest and faculty availability.
You will be informed of the concentration choice(s) available on each scheduling option before
beginning the advanced curriculum. If your preferred concentration is not offered on your scheduling
option, you may be able to switch schedules in the advanced curriculum on a space-available basis.

Tuition & Fees: The MSW Extended Degree Program is a fee-based program. EDP students pay per
credit, regardless of number of credits and regardless of resident status. This is a critical distinction
between the MSW Extended Degree Program and the state-sponsored MSW Day program. For
resident students, EDP is more expensive than the Day program. For non-resident students, EDP is
less expensive than the Day program. The 2014-2015 per credit rate for EDP is $673. The 20152016 per credit rate will be determined in mid-summer. Tuition is set annually in mid-summer and
increases each year.

Maintaining Employment: Many EDP students are able to maintain full or part-time employment
through the first year. Beginning the second year, students should be prepared to reduce work hours
and/or make changes to work schedules to complete their foundation and advanced practicum
requirements. To accommodate the advanced practicum in particular, students will be expected to
reduce work hours.

Field Education: EDP students are required to complete a foundation practicum and an advanced
practicum. The more flexible a student can be in terms of scheduling, the more practicum options
there will be. Only a limited number of agencies are able to offer supervised field education on
evening and weekend schedules. Particularly for the Advanced Practicum, students are expected to
have weekday daytime hours available for their field placements.

Accessing Certificate Programs and Dual Degrees: When schedules and finances permit, EDP
students are able to add a Certificate Program to their MSW degree (e.g. Global Health Certificate).
Program administrators are currently exploring the feasibility of dual degree options for EDP students
(e.g. concurrent MSW/MPH or concurrent MSW/MPA). Please contact the program coordinator or
program director for more information.

Registration: As fee-based students, EDP students must register through UW Professional &
Continuing Education (PCE). Each quarter, a PCE registration form will be posted online, which
students must complete and submit via phone, fax, mail or in-person. EDP students do NOT register
online.
