HRSA Technical Assistance Workshop for 2010-2015 Grantees
If you haven’t done so already, please register for this 2-day conference, “New Horizons in Evaluation for Geriatric
Education Centers”, to take place at Case Western Reserve University (NTACC’s central office) in Cleveland, OH, October
22 and 23, 2010. You may contact Vanessa Astraitis, NTACC Project Coordinator, vanessa.astraitis@case.edu, 216-7788367. The purpose of the workshop is to gather all funded Geriatric Education Centers (GECs) in preparation for program
evaluation. An important focus will be the development of strategies for implementing evidence based practice projects. The
conference will set the stage for HRSA to build the evaluation capacity of the GECs as they enter the 2010-2015 grant cycle.
NTACC at the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) 2010
The NTACC will be presenting a Pre-Conference Institute (PCI) at GSA 2010 in New Orleans, LA, November 19, 2010, (8
a.m. to Noon). We are also offering NTACC-GEC Evaluation Consultations on November 20 during the conference (look
for details by e-mail).
Pre-Conference Institute
“Mixed Methods for Evaluating Educational Interventions in Support of Evidence Based Practices (EBPs)”
The Workshop will focus on:
 Applying the literature and field evidence from diabetes management and falls prevention on linkages between
educational interventions, knowledge gain, and Evidence Based Practices. Presenters will specifically demonstrate
geriatric education outcomes of a field-based case study in the area of diabetes management.

Map the translation of literature and GEC field examples to local programming and evaluation. Participants will
work together through discussion groups to place measurable indicators into a model for their own evaluation
planning.

Demonstrate the importance of project stakeholders in evaluation planning for specific practice demonstrations.
Participants will discuss the importance of selecting and involving stakeholders at the front end of projects that seek
practice change outcomes.

Identify contextual factors pertinent to implementing EBP-based interventions. These may include organizational
opportunities for practices to occur, facility-specific policies and procedures, trainee willingness to adopt practices,
professional discipline, or program exposure levels (among others). Strategies for integrating these contextual
factors into evaluation designs will be offered.

NTACC-GEC Evaluation Consultation at GSA 2010
Set up an appointment with an evaluation specialist to discuss your evaluation plans or ideas and questions for NTACC
evaluation experts at GSA. Guidance on developing logic models, creating evaluation plans, or general evaluation strategies
may be discussed. Feel free to contact Julianne Manchester, PhD, NTACC Project Director, 216-778-7147, or Vanessa
Astraitis, Project Coordinator, 216-778-8367, for more information. Check the NTACC website, http://ntacc.bhpr.hrsa.gov/
periodically for updates.
NTACC Webinar Series
The next Webinar in our series will be held September 23 at 3:00 p.m. Eastern. During this Webinar, we will be focusing
on “Stakeholder-Based Evaluation Approaches for GEC Projects: Implications for Evidence Based Practices.”
Participants will discuss stakeholder involvement when evaluating programs for evidence based practices. Program areas
will be discussed in terms of sample practices and placed within the context of an evaluation cycle. Selected GECs will
discuss their own, similar strategies for incorporating stakeholders into their evaluation processes.

NAGE/NAGEC 2010 CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FORM
An important part of being a GEC is the opportunity to participate in our united efforts by being involved in our national
organizations: the National Association for Geriatric Education (NAGE) and the National Association of Geriatric Education
Centers (NAGEC). Members in good standing are eligible to serve on the Board of Directors. This is your opportunity to
nominate someone from the network to serve as an officer or member of the Board.
In order to self-nominate, nominate a Board member, be nominated as a Board member, or vote in the elections, you must
represent a current or past paid member for 2010 or provide an intent to pay the 2011 dues in the form of a proof of check
request with your nomination form. A list of GECs that paid their dues in 2010 follows this form.
Before you nominate someone for a position, please contact your nominee to verify their interest in serving as a Board
Member/Officer. Board participation involves attending the annual face-to-face meeting (usually in conjunction with GSA),
monthly conference call board meetings, and occasional special conference call meetings.
President: The President serves a one-year term (November 2010 to November 2011) and is the principal executive officer
of NAGE/NAGEC. S/he is responsible for supervising and controlling all of the business and affairs of the organizations;
presiding at all meetings of the members and of the Board of Directors; appointing all Committees; signing contracts; and
performing all duties needed for leadership of the Board.
President-Elect. In the absence of the President, or in event of her/his inability or refusal to act, the President-Elect
performs the duties of President. S/he is responsible for other duties as assigned by the President or by the Board of
Directors. The term of office is for one year (November 2010 to November 2011).
Board Members. Board Members serve a 3-year term (November 2010 to November 2013) and are responsible for actively
participating in monthly conference calls and other calls as required by the President; meeting face-to-face once a year,
usually in conjunction with GSA; participating on committees; and representing the GEC network and supporting the work of
NAGE/NAGEC. When ballots are counted, those nominees with the most votes will be elected to the open positions.

Houston Geriatric Education Center (HGEC)
Rhonda Bailes, Education Coordinator
The Houston Geriatric Education Center is pleased to be the recipient of one of the competitive renewal awards from HRSA
for the next 5 years. We are expanding our current program to include a 40 hour certificate course in gerontology for health
professional faculty and an additional 160 hour certificate course in gerontology. Additionally we are developing a course in
palliative care for our Evidenced Based Practice undertaking. Grace Varas, DO, who is an expert in palliative care, is leading
that initiative.
Check out our HGEC Website at www.Houstongec.org It has a totally new look, is very user friendly and we hope to have
many more postings in the future. If any of you would like to access the courses that we offer, feel free to contact Rhonda
Bailes, our Education Coordinator, who will be able to set you up with a user name and password. Rhonda can be reached at
