The following training courses are being offered throughout YCS during
December 2011. These training courses are open to all interested staff unless
otherwise specified. Pre-Registration is mandatory. Southern Region training
courses are in bold print. * Denotes training course meets YCS Training
requirements. ** Denotes training course meets DYFS and/or DMHS training
requirements.
The YCS Training Department is available to assist and support employees
throughout the training process. For questions regarding the upcoming training

Agency Orientation*
Target Audience: All new employees, volunteers and interns.
Prerequisite: None
Technology Requirements: None
Assessment Methods: Learners will be required to pass a knowledge test with
80% or better.
The goal of Agency Orientation is to provide new employees and volunteers an
overview of the agency, review the YCS Mission, review programs and services
provided for children and their families throughout the agency. In addition the
following training courses will be covered; Agency Overview, Health & Safety,
Corporate Compliance, Child/Adolescent Development & Identifying Child
Abuse and Neglect, Diversity, Workplace Harassment, Alcohol & Substance
Abuse, HIV/AIDS & Sexuality, Fire Extinguisher Training. Employees will
receive information related to YCS policies and employees. During Orientation
employees and volunteers receive their YCS Photo ID. Learner outcomes are
reviewed in each training course for multi-training sessions.

Fire Extinguisher Training

Target Audience: All Staff of DYFS/DMHS licensed programs

Assessment Methods: Demonstrate skills for course instructor to successfully
complete this course
At the end of this training session, learners will be able to:
 Identify the 4 classes or types of fires.
 Identify the 4 types of fire extinguishers used for each type of fire
 Describe the PASS procedure and techniques for extinguishing a fire
The instructor will review the classes of fire, types of fire extinguisher used for
each type of fire, demonstrate the PASS procedure. Video and practice of fire
extinguisher procedures will be enhance learning.

Microsoft Excel II

Assessment Methods: Demonstrate creating a spreadsheet, using basic function and tools
of Microsoft Excel I and knowledge of computers.
This course is designed to train employees on intermediate Microsoft Excel
techniques. It includes advance functions, formatting, print options, protection,
sharing and automating. It uses company applications of the system and provides
hands on experience in its operations.

Assessment Methods: Demonstrating how to use templates
This Course is designed to train employees on intermediate Microsoft Word techniques. It
includes creating: templates, envelopes, labels, outlining, headers and footers, tables and
columns. It uses company applications of the system and provides hands on experience in its
operations.
Learning Objectives:



How to create a word document, save, name, print preview, print, open a
word document, open icons, use the mouse to open documents
Learn the various views of documents, zoom features, insertion points,
editing a document, spelling and grammar, find and replace, select text,
undo, repeat, redo, cut/copy/paste, drag and drop, create multiple
documents.
Learn how to format enhance text, use painter, paragraph formats, line
spacing, ruler, tabs/indents, set margins, and insert page breaks, use
bullets, boarders, headings, short cuts and wizards.

**ARC CPR/AED/ First Aid
Presented by: YCS ARC Instructors
Target Audience: All YCS staff
Prerequisite: None
Technology Requirements: None
Assessment Methods: Learners will be required to demonstrate skills for course
instructor to successfully complete this course.
Instructors will review skills necessary to perform Adult /Pediatric CPR and defibrillator
training for adults. Participants will then practice and demonstrate these techniques for
the course instructor. The afternoon session will focus on Basic First Aid. Upon
successful completion participants will receive certification cards.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this training, participants will be able to:
 Explain the importance of universal precautions
 Recognize the warning signs, symptoms and treatment for heart attack, and stroke.
 Recognize the warning signs, symptoms and treatment for sudden cardiac arrest.
 List the emergency action steps: Assess, Alert, Attend to the ABCDs.
 Describe how to position the victim for CPR.
 Explain and demonstrate how to open an airway
 Explain and demonstrate how to check for breathing.
 Describe and demonstrate how to give effective rescue breaths.
 Explain and demonstrate how to give effective chest compressions
 List the steps of CPR with one rescuer.
 Describe and demonstrate how to safely and correctly attach and operate an AED.

YCS Training Day is an opportunity for staff to meet their training requirements. The following
training topics will be covered in training day: Agency Overview, Review of Corporate
Compliance Plan, OSHA Workplace Safety-Blood Borne Pathogens and Standard Precautions,
Child/Adolescent Development, Diversity, Suicide Prevention training, Substance Abuse
Awareness training, and HIV/AIDS/Sexuality. Learner outcomes are identified in training
materials for individual training sessions.

Non-Violent Crisis Intervention

80% or better and demonstrate skills for course instructor to successfully
complete this course
The Non-Violent Crisis Intervention program is an introduction to crisis prevention that
emphasizes early intervention and non-physical methods for preventing or controlling
disruptive behavior. Included in this training are techniques for personal safety and
participative study of crisis prevention methods. At the end of this training, learners will
be able to:

Provide for the care. Welfare, safety and security of all involved in a
crisis situation
 Identify the 4 stages of the Crisis Development Model and the
appropriate staff response.
 Identify and demonstrate verbal techniques to de-escalate behavior
 Demonstrate physical intervention techniques when necessary as a last
resort due to an individual’s dangerous behavior.
Pre-registration is mandatory, Please dress comfortably as you will be
practicing and demonstrating verbal and physical intervention technique.

 Identify and demonstrate nonverbal, preverbal, verbal and physical
intervention skills

Identify and demonstrate team intervention techniques to resolve disruptive
and dangerous situations effectively, safely and respectfully.
Problem solves and strengthens crisis intervention skills as applicable to
participant’s individual program.

Handle with Care is a system of techniques that preserve the emotional and physical
safety of children and youth. Verbal and Physical Interventions will be demonstrated for
participants. Participants will then practice and demonstrate these techniques for Handle
with Care Instructors. Please dress comfortably (athletic wear preferred).
At the end of this training learners will be able to:
 Describe how tension contributes to inappropriate behavior in children
 Identify responses that indicate tension levels are rising
 Understand and demonstrate verbal intervention skills
 Understand and demonstrate physical intervention skills when it is
necessary to intervene physically
 Understand how to combine and demonstrate verbal and physical
intervention skills
 Understand and demonstrate how to and when to withdraw an
intervention technique.
