Elvey (1816 - 1893) Marko Petričić, Organ *CALL TO WORSHIP A. J. Neier Blessed be the God of our Savior, Jesus Christ! God has given us a new birth in the living hope of the resurrection. God has given us an inheritance that is imperishable and unfading. In this we rejoice, even when we suffer trials. For although we have not seen Jesus, we love him; and although we have not seen him, we believe in him. For the outcome of our faith is the salvation of our souls. *INTROIT This Joyful Eastertide *HYMN NO. 244 This Joyful Eastertide arr. The music, a Dutch carol from the 17th century, was arranged for four part singing by Charles Wood (1866 – 1926). Like Charles Stanford, also a leading figure in the revival of English sacred music which began in the 1880s and gathered strength after 1900, Wood was an Irishman. He taught at Cambridge University and is best known for his sacred choral compositions. The anthem (11:00) “Surgens Jesus” was composed by British composer Peter Phillips in 1612. Phillips spent most of his adult life in the Spanish Netherlands (Antwerp and Brussels), which helps explain why his music sounds more “Italianate” than English. “Surgens Jesus” serves as an introduction to our Gospel lesson this morning. The piece expresses the serenity of the risen Jesus’ greeting to his disciples, their Alleluias, and their joy. The opening is contrapuntal (different voices moving at different times), then we encounter a homophonic section (all voices moving together at the same time) at “Gavisi sunt discipuli” – “the disciples rejoiced.” The two Alleluia sections move at a faster speed, which makes for a joyful lilt. Note the block chords at “And said: Peace be unto you” (“Dixit: Pax vobis”). NEWS AND OPPORTUNITIES Confirmation Reception - Today, 10am. New Member Brunch - Today, 12pm.
