Name: The Grapes of Wrath Scrapbook Project Directions: For this assignment, you are to take the role of an ethnographer and document the migration of farm workers from Oklahoma to California. You will put your collection of materials together in the form of a scrapbook. This scrapbook should tell the story of the reallife Dust Bowl farmers as well as the fictional Joad family from The Grapes of Wrath. Your scrapbook should explore the themes presented in the text: forces of the times, putting family first, the people’s justice, choices and regret, and trusting one’s own instinct. Your scrapbook must include the following: At least eight artifacts - two due per week will be checked the same day as the weekly vocab. quiz (see due dates on back) Each artifact must have a quality caption, a cited passage from The Grapes of Wrath connected to your artifact, and an explanation that connects the artifact to an overall theme Map detailing the Joad’s journey Bound with a quality, decorative cover and backing (see Ms. M. for supplies and suggestions) A copy of this rubric with your project Artifact Suggestions: Each week you will need one (hand drawn) character portrait on a different character from the book, including a cited passage from the book, passage analysis, connection and prediction as we’ve done for characters from other books. Your second weekly artifact is your choice, including objects related to genealogy (family trees should be illustrated), transportation (car advertisements should include illustrations and prices), food, clothing (include clothing worn by men, women and children, labeled illustrations and prices), housing, working conditions, music (songs should at least include lyrics and an analysis of their tone and meaning), games (diagrams and drawings as well as rules), customs/rites of passage, etc. Much of this assignment comes from the following website that has links to websites where you can find information for your artifacts: www.bright.net/~dlackey/amfplan.html. Keep in mind that you still need to connect your artifact with a passage from the book and if you are using someone else’s map, photograph, music, etc, you need to cite your source. If you are drawing/creating your artifact yourself, make sure that it is as detailed as possible, and labeled if necessary, or you will lose points! Class time to work on this project cannot be guaranteed, especially once the crazy block scheduling starts for STAR testing but you are welcome to come by to regularly scheduled tutorials on Tuesday and Wednesday for help. Rubric This project is worth a total of 100 points. Each entry is worth ten points and the final ten points is for the overall appearance and binding.
